It is not possible to press thee axle bearings on too far, the axle register stops the inner bearing race scope You can NOT press it on to far! You can press it on not all the way though work
What makes you think you have a problem with that axle and bearing?

Stock 5 x 4" bolt pattern A body axles measure 27.7".

Looks like the sure-grip side gear/clutch hub splines are mis-aligned or the inner axle seals are not driven into the housing far enough.

If its a Clutch Sure Grip, your inside "Axle shaft Alignment Spacer" pins may be popped out of their holes deep inside the center. I have seen these pins fall out and get stuck in and the axles can not go all the way in.

These pins are required so that when you turn the axle adjuster that is on one side (I think left axle) it will push the other axle out so both axles end plays are even.

Pop the pumpkin out and look inside to the alignment pins.

hi
looks like you used the green bearings , soo you have to remove the axel spacer pin in the carrier !

if you have no adjuster for end play on the one axel you got green bearings !

1969 was the change over year(some early cars had the clutch types) on the posi units from the Dana clutch type with the center pins to the spring type cup and cone style without them. The later style has springs inside that can be seen from the hole in the carrier. The clutch style carriers are two piece that bolt together and the alter style is cast in one piece with one side open to put the interior parts inside them wrench
OP, you can use a flashlight from one side of the rear end housing to look inside it to see if the axle adjusting end pins are in there or not. If there is a hole in the center with no parts laying inside the splined part of the posi unit on that side you may need to look on the other side shruggy
if no hole in the center block of the posi unit you have the later style posi scope

I'm betting Doc Diff's analysis is correct, misaligned splines in the side gear.

ALL 8.75 carriers originally came with a center thrust spacer installed. If you are running a stock housing, stock axles, stock brakes and snap-ring style Green bearings, it does NOT need to be removed.

Either the splines, or I'm thinking the topicstarter mistakes 'bottoming out' with the bearing's outside O-ring trying to enter the actual housing.
Some grease on the O-ring and a few light taps around the bearing or axle-flange should pop it right in.

Ive come to the conclusion that the housing was made or cut down and was made to short.. I took rubber seals off bearings and still bottoming out with about a 1/2 to go.. going to try find an original A body 8 3/4 axle and see if same problem,,,

Are you sure the clutch hub splines are lined up?

What is the housing width flange-to-flange? Stock A-body is 52 5/8".

iagree That is what I remember measuring across the front with no third member in the housing from the outer axle bearing flange to the other outside flange wrench

Hard to imagine someone spending the money, time and energy to cut just 1.625" off a rear end. Most get chopped 3+ inches.
