I wonder if he accidently stuck it into reverse?
Why did it hop a little off the starting line like he hit the throttle and then let off and then got back on the throttle again work Did he roll the sprague doing that?

Wow, I don't want to say he's lucky, but that helmet saved his life!!

It sure would be interesting to find out what initiated that kind of
destruction of the driveline.

Something failed at one end or the other to twist that shaft like that.

I can't imagine the rear locking up would do that, but it looked like the tires were smoking
at the time of the explosion.

Seriously ugly, regardless of the cause.

A good friend of mine was one of those guys that felt he had to shift into neutral after a pass. He totaled his car after missing neutral.

after missing neutral

The technology to prevent selecting anything but high gear and neutral with the throttle closed is 50 years old, and has like 3 moving parts.
I guess that's why it's not mandatory - it doesn't cost enough.

This is our local track.Turbo 400s have been known to explode when shifted into neutral after the run. Is this what happened? At 2:16 into the video I see the input shaft laying out . However in this case the driveshaft appears to have twisted in half. Why? Did the trans cause it? Don't know.

Doubt he shifted into neutral as he wasn't past the finish line when it let go. Probably a stock 50 year old drive shaft with a million runs on it. The pic they show of it all mangled at the end looks like a fairly small diameter with mild wall thickness. Scary accident for sure.

Around :30 and in slow motion around :46 it looks like the car’s nose dips slightly.
I doubt the track has a dip at that point but maybe.

That wasn’t a very fast car. Looked like a 6 something pass at best.

Spend money on a good shaft and put good loops in the car that are attached to something heavier than 20ga sheet metal? Naw...I've had this stuff in the car for years and nothing has ever happened. You guys are just trying to sell me crap.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

All that money spent and it looks like an OE drive shaft.

When you see a drive shaft break in the center like that you know the tube was too small in diameter and the wall thickness was too thin. And probably it was a cheap materiel.

BTDT.

Just because you think it won't make it true. Horsepower is KING. To dispute this is stupid. C. Alston

Install a carbon shaft and a Reid case.

Word round the camp fire was that the rear locked up.......no idea as to why.
We learned the hard way about trying to use a stock drive shaft very early on.
On street tires , it spun hard into third.
When it finally hooked , it twisted the shaft in half , shelled the trans case and beat a hole in the floor behind the front seats.
The loop did it's job.
And I could see that being a contributor to this one.
It could have been so much worse.
