My trusty 84 Dodge plow truck lost reverse at the end of last winter, along with high gear. Of course I put off pulling it until now because I HATE working on rusty rusty stuff and frankly remain a novice at 4WD stuff.

Getting close to pulling the transfer case 1st, but am not sure which end of the adapter housing between the 727 and transfer case I should unbolt in order to separate them. Does it even matter? The Haynes manual is of no help. Advice?

One other thing; recommendation on where to find a new bushing for the transfer case lever. The existing one is shot.

Thanks in advance.

I did this a long time ago, I think i separated it at the transmission end.
I hope someone who's done it recently will verify!

On my '76 with an NP203 i pulled the engine at the same time and left the transfer case chained up under the truck.
Your NP208 isn't as heavy so you might not need to do this!

I did the same on my '77 when the trans needed redone.Easier to pull it out of the front as those 203 cases are HEAVY! Plus no crossmember to mess with. RT

IMHO, remove the xfer from trans mount adaptor and the engine trans sits there on the crossmember. my 203 was 7 bolts and let it swing down and hang then kick it off the tail shaft, then remove crossmember and 727 as a unit.

IIRC the 7 bolts made a horseshoe shape around the adaptor, I would rotate the xfer and let heavy end hang down. when going back up I would stand the xfer on end and lift it with a floor jack and couple guys balancing it till it was up on the output shaft and slide up into place and rotated back up to line bolt holes again.

I had a trans jack that made things easier but unbolted and kicked a many xfers off the shaft and let it fall to the ground when not in the shop on concrete. then it a straight forward 727 trans R&R more or less.

any work on the bell end/pump seal of 727 always got the engine yanked and the trans/xfer will balance on the adaptor mount.
OH! and unbolt xfer shifter/mount first. LOL!

that one you want to unbolt at the transfer case end where it has nuts w/studs and it will pull about 1/2 the studs out when you do it
