We are headed to Maui in mid January.

Looking for suggestions for a week or so. Nice but not outrageous

The Four Seasons in Wailea is the amazing. I have stayed there a couple of times and everything is perfect! Be prepared to spend $$s tho

I visited the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort in Lahaina too - didn't stay there but it looked very nice as well

In 2006 my wife and I honeymooned in Hawaii. We stayed a couple days on Maui. We stayed at The Whaler. It was set up like a small apartment with a kitchen and dining area. It wasn't anything outstanding but it was clean and fairly inexpensive. The beach was basically right out our door. I have no idea what it's like 13 years later.

You need to take a bike tour down Haleakala. I hadn't been on a bike in years but you don't really do any pedaling...just coasting. They take you up to the top before sunrise. You get to watch the sun rise above the clouds. It's an amazing view. Then you coast down the volcano to the beach below.

Whereever you stay, be sure to stop in Lahaina for a plate lunch! I recommend the Locomoco Pengrims

What's your budget?

Best place to research Maui is here: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g29220-i86-Maui_Hawaii.html

Love The Whaler! It's my wife and my favorite place to stay on Maui. It has been upgraded a lot since you were there in 2006. Grounds are much nicer and many of the rooms have been upgraded. Since it's a condo, you can save money by cooking some of your meals.

We have timeshares so we always stay in Kaanapali. There is a cool resort in Napili bay that has the best snorkeling that we always drive up to. twocents

I always stay at Napili Point. There is a set of town houses that the owners sublet. The cove there is the best snorkeling on the island. Walk around the corner and you are on a massive beach.

This has changed some since you were there, unless the Feds have relented in the last year or so since we visited. You can still bike down, but they no longer allow the bikes up to the top to start this. Also, if you want to see the sunrise up top, the Fed had also limited the number of vehicles up top for this sunrise viewing, and you have to reserve a spot.

We've been using the "Hawaii Revealed" series of books (or their app), and it's always been a good source of info to use for planning G a trip to the islands.

Interesting. It may have been that way when I was there too and I just forgot. I remember they picked us up at our hotel in a van at around 2:30 AM. They took us to their warehouse where we watched a short video and told us what to expect that day. Then we loaded up and went to the top where we all froze until the sun came up. They might have trucked us down a little ways from the top to start the bike tour...I don't remember that.

FYI - that book has been proven to encourage trespassing. I would recommend not letting any locals see you with that book unless you want confrontation on your vacation.

He's actually got pretty cautious on some things, in the last editions we have updated on their app. I imagine because of trespassing issues. I DID notice a BIG difference in places that were off limits, from our visit in '99 to a visit in 2015. Saw a ton of people still using them on recent visits, as well as us. We like the restaurant and activities listings/ratings. Always better than any other guide books we've seen for the islands.

My wife & I spent a week there about 4 years ago. Here I am above the clouds at 10,000 feet at the top of Mt. Haleackala.

Totally an amazing place and view.

I highly recommend taking the Maui Sunrise Downhill Bicycle Tour.
You'll never forget it.

I can`t help with any suggestions but Maui is one of the places on my bucket list. Not sure if I ever make it but hoping to.
