Gang:

My car's 8 3/4's rear end was rebuilt and I have 0 miles yet. The third member and the housing is leaking (just a few drops on both) so, I dropped it out. Anyway, I have another rear housing, painted it, and need to swap everything from one to the other when I get home from my deployment. Also, I have the manual as well to follow. It should be an easy swap, right? I'll be getting new gaskets and adjuster as well. Am I thinking this right that it should be somewhat easy? Advice/opinions? No, I've never done something like this before but it's a learning tool. Thanks

What is it about the leak that makes you think that the housing itself is the problem and not a gasket or seal?

Because the original housing was bent, cut to straighten, welded back. It has 1 or 2 minor leaks. Overall, the leaks isn't bad but my OCD wants to NOT have a differential leaking.

Once again OCD rears it's ugly head, I feel your pain but it should be a straight forward swap.

Make sure there are no residual gaskets pieces or sealer left on both sealing surfaces, on the rear end housing and the mating flange surface on the third member scope wrench
Good luck, to bad about the leaky one.
Let us know what you think was causing it to leak after you get it apart thumbs
BTW, I have had used 8 3/4 seep out of the threads on the lower studs due to the soft copper washers being removed and not reused scope whiney A good silicone sealer on those threads are your friend up

X 2 on what the smilie Xpert says ....

THEN spend an hour prepping the HOUSING to glue the gasket to it THEN make the pig flange spotless and oil it up.

Like posted above it's pretty straightforward but make sure you get the CORRECT seals and gaskets from doctordiff because he will only sell you the correct seals and any other chassis parts you need for the swap.

Thanks guys. Speaking of Dr. Diff, I see on his site he has all the gaskets as a kit. He also has a more beefier billet adjuster as well. I'll keep everyone posted what I find when I return home to swap them.

What are your suggestions can I do/use to get surface rust and or to clean out the inside of the axle housing?

Are you talking about surface rust on the housing or carrier or on the inside of either one of them?
I use spray Easy Off oven cleaner after rinsing any car part with cleaning solvent that has had oil or grease inside or on the outside of them. If the rust is inside the axle housing your om your own on that, sorry blush
If on the outside can you get it sand blasted? scope up

You can buy a brush with a long wire handle at Harbor freight or other similar store. That’s what I use with naphtha or degreaser.

Also, what is everyone using for the mating surfaces, on either side of the gasket for the third member, if any?

Any chance you have a Redi Strip within driving distance? All of my big pieces like diffs and Ks go to them. Well worth the time and effort to use them and know that ALL of the grease, oil, rust, gaskets, etc is removed from the entire piece. Inside and out.

Buy a gallon of EvapoRust. Plug the axle ends and vent. Pour the EvapoRust inside and let it sit. You can rotate the housing every half hour or so(depending on amount of rust) so the liquid will reach every area.

Citric acid or molasses will do the trick a bit slower than the evaporust
Molasses 1:9 with warm water, let it sit for a day or two, Farm grade has sulphur in it that helps the process
works surprisingly well, generally wont harm NON metallic paints too
