I never really cared for the Dukes of Hazzard before, but I really have no use for it now.

If you watch the video, Schneider says that about 50 miniatures were used which would account for the discrepancies. He also says that he used to estimate 320ish himself because he had forgot about the miniatures.

Of the total wrecked I wonder how many were rebuilt/repaired and used again. That would probably cut in to the actual amount of cars that were used. I guess a better question would be how many chargers were purchased to use on the show. As far as the loss of chargers during the making of the show. I would think many of the chargers would have went to the crusher anyhow.

Really, looking back, the show came out in 1979 I think. They picked the best car for the job in there thinking. Its so so easy to look back and now say shame shame shame.

So I ask this, would the charger be such as an world wide known iconic car if 300+ - cars were not used. I think not. And I even recall back when the show came out, you could tell they didnt use a fresh car each time, there were some real pos used in some scenes. It was obvious by the tail pipe smoke, off year chargers from the main good ones used in scenes. Better 300 vs 3k.

I wonder if anyone ever kept track of the breakdown of the years and factory engine option? Every show has a budget so I myself might think they might of scouted for some lower priced ones. Maybe I should watch the vid.

us hardcore Mopar guys back in the day, talked about the number of cars being destroyed, and that an article about it said the production company was buying about any 69 chargers that were offered up for sale.

Non of us lamented the loss, just that a lot of cars were being smashed. Chargers could be bought from 800 to 1200 bucks. you could buy a real nice
dana equipped one for 2500.

I remember back then there was some property in Newhall, CA where there always about 15 of the Chargers and a few of the other vehicles.
Every time I'd pass it I felt bad for those cars, as I hated their wanton destruction.
Most were orange, wrecked in some fashion, and they rotated in & out, presumably after some hack repairs.
There'd also sometimes be un-hacked cars apparently recently purchased; wasn't able to get close, but they mostly looked OK from the street.

If you want to be mad at the show, don't be mad about a handful of the cars getting destroyed on the show...be mad about the countless others that were destroyed by being turned into Dukes clones. laugh2

You're equating being destroyed with being a Duke clone? I'm not following the logic.

He’s saying creating a DofH clone is a shame, and a terrible thing to do to a Charger. He’s not wrong.

Warner Brothers was also buying 68 Chargers and making DofH cars. They had to to meet production schedules.

I wouldn't disagree, but it still doesn't equate with "destroyed".

The 318 powered cars where used for driving and the 383,440 cars where used in stunts like jumping them whiney
Most of you on here don't know about or forgot that the first gas crunch occurred during the making of those shows so a lot of those cars could be bought very cheaply in SO CA back then, I heard that the studio where going from SO CA up to Las Vegas and as far east as Phoenix, AZ and up to northern CA buying cars to use in that show shruggy

During the late 70's & early 80's chargers were a dime a dozen...
They wrecked what, maybe 300 out of the 90,000 or so driving around... about 1/3 of a % of those produced.
Probably used a few 70's too, increasing the available pool even farther. (not like you could tell the difference from behind)

And they were dirt cheap when DoH was being filmed... even the R/T's...
I picked up a nice, EV2 '70 440 R/T SE, for $900 in '83... ran like a raped ape. biggrin
By 1986 I couldn't give it away in the area where I lived... no one wanted a "Duke's Charger"

40yrs later the Charger likely has the popularity it has now, because of the Duke's of Hazzard...
So the 300 wrecked was probably worth it in the end. whistling

Given that I know of a B5 blue and white '69 R/T that has suffered such a fate, I sure won't argue the point!

My friend has a General Lee clone, and we had college girls hanging out the window of there car flashing their boobs at us because they loved the car! People love the car everywhere he takes it. People want their pictures taken with it,and little kids want to sit in it! Say what you want, but I have been driving my Chargers for 40 years, and the DOH clone was the only one the girls wipped out their hooters for !

The episodes with the fake miniatures were terrible. The same stuff was done on Knight Rider and The Fall Guy.
I think back about the show, (It was on before I was born) and wonder if they actually kept any detailed records of the cars. It seems not. My best guess is that the stunt team/Second unit had a budget and as long as they met their goals within that budget, all was well. I have read that some cars were given a number separate from their original VIN.
'68 Chargers were used. They received '69 taillight panels cut from wrecked jump cars. Imagine that other cars used in collisions were cosmetically repaired and used for jumps later. I've read that NO 1970 cars were used and that only one 4 speed car was ever used.
I think it is the fact that these cars were abused and jumped that led to the current popularity of them. The Nash Bridges 1971 Barracuda had a lot of screen time but who ever talks about those cars ?
