I found a HV oil pump in my garage and was thinking of using it my stock 440 rebuild. Non race engine. Is this a bad idea?

Stock clearances? Stock RPM? Use a stock pump. In this application, a HV pump will just waste power and heat the oil more by circulating the excess back through the relief valve. Pressure and volume are different things. You can have a high volume pump with a 40 psi spring in the relief valve.

Pressure and volume are different things. You don't say. More importantly, if the engine clearances don't need enough oil to pass the full pump volume at 40 psi (or whatever the relief spring pressure is), the rest will circulate through the relief valve, as I pointed out to begin with! The gerotor pump is a positive-displacement design. Every revolution, the oil has to go somewhere. If it's not going through the bearings, lifters, etc. then it is just wasted volume.
