i recently had to convert my land line phone service to a different company [and yes, it doesn't work any ways close to how it did before. mad].
during power outages, the phone always worked.
now when the power goes out, i have to buy a "battery backup" for $35.00 from the provider if i want the phone to work as it did before.
is there anything out there that is better [and hopefully cheaper] than what the phone provider is offering ?
and no, we are [most likely] the only people in town that do not have a cell phone.

I'm assuming it's a battery that fits in your cable modem? Find the make and model of modem and google the battery for that model.

you aren't going to find a good one cheaper than 35 bucks.
BUT you probably can find a more versatile or useful for other things one for around that price or a little more.

you have to battery back up the router/modem usually at a minimum. you will also have to battery back up the phone base station unless you are using a regular old corded phone plugged into the back.

cyberpower is my preferred due to warranty over APC.

You are looking for a UPS basically.
The cheapest probably are going to run you around 40 bucks, but you can power anything that plugs in normally to a wall socket with one.
price goes up depending on the load you want to back up and for how long.

I agree with Andrew H. I did go with APC but that doesn't mean its better.

$35 sounds like Verizon's cheapo copout when they claim that people being forced to use FiOS for the land line phone service have the same reliability. They provide a cheap plastic box that holds, wait for it, 12 D-cell batteries. They provide the first 12. After that, you're on your own. rolleyes The instructions say not to leave it hooked up because it will drain the batteries. mad Instructions also say rechargeable batteries must not be used. flame

So check into what they are offering. It ought to be a small ni-cad or lead acid unit that you don't have to touch for several years.
If its just powering the cable, converter and phones it doesn't need to be very big.
Verizon actually has such a thing. It used to be included in their FiOS phone option before they cheaped out.
They are also not the only ones.
If you can find one that works with your service, that might be a clean answer. It will need a 110 V AC outlet just like the ONT or whatever your provider is calling the entry interface and converter.

My answer was to drop Verizon and use 4G with Ooma and my own backup UPS. But sounds like you just need a decent battery unit.

Look for a Belkin Battery Backup Unit
Revision B
On eBay
or local thrift store.

Used they are usually about $5 to $9
But some need a new internal sealed lead acid SLA 7 amp hour battery,
but you can extend the +/- wires to use nearly any 12 volt lead acid battery, even large Marine ones.

These provide 12 volts DC through a coaxial plug to
VOIP telephone units, routers, cable modems, etc.

thanks for the replies guys ! this gives me something to search for.
it's not the $35 that really bugs me, it is the idea that the price is for a cheap piece of junk that either eats batteries [as somewhat eluded to by the using regular batteries statement], or is a [way] marked up item that can be bought elsewhere for peanuts.

DoC, if i get the crank handle fixed on the phone, will you come up and crank it up in my time of need ?

Comcast did the same thing on their new modems a few years ago now you have to buy the battery . The old one's used to come with the battery backup in them. If it's like the old one I had the battery in it stayed charged since it was always plugged in and never went bad in over 4 years before it had to be replaced with the new model.

got a call from a comcast rep several days ago asking how my phone service was. i told him i was cautiously optimistic, and the very next day, it went screwy again.

If it makes you feel any better comcast goes out 90% of the time the power goes off so even with a battery backup the phone won't work. Most use the back-up because of their computer. I don't use one.

I worked as a lineman for the power company for 37 years and keep the old land line because it was the only one that would work when the power was off and they were trying to call me into work.

Several years ago we were out of town on a huge storm and the young guys were all bitching about not having any cell service? I laughed and told them there wasn't any power within a 100 miles of us so how do they think the servers and towers were going to work. LOL In the years since they had installed generators at most relay centers. In the past they would send a guy with a can of gas and portable generator and have them sit there until the power was restored.

There are a bunch of APC battery back-up units in the building I bought, no idea if they are any good or how long they last... shruggy

mostly it will be the battery in them that goes bad.
depending on how large they are, batteries run around 20 to 50 bucks with the big ones being multiple batteries wired up internally.
They don't go for much used, but if you extend the wiring, any 12 volt battery will work. The larger ones are better wave forms for more sensitive gear, but it will convert to 110 for pretty much anything.
