They are actually pretty quiet, the newer SS are much more so then the older al. body units. The do have a lifespan if your run them hard, Im an rpm freak and much over 7k alot seems to destroy them inside, then they sound like a straight through race muffler.
On my one ride with a ive two cars with them, the 2.5 system is loads easier on the ear then the 3 inch ones.
I'm running Magnaflow (single of y to muffler, then split to duals out the back) on my '93 W150 360. I love it. A little rumble, but not too much, and not noisy at high speeds either. I'm not a big fan of loud and proud anymore. I'll be running dual Magnaflows on my '73 W200 360 when I get the dash back together and the truck running.
I like them. I used 2 different ones on my 5.7 2500, one big round one on my wagoneer, and i have one on my magnum powered wrangler. Those were different length and round vs oval but all 3" single. All had different results. The ram was the quietest. Wagoneer had the longest round one wasn't terribly loud but had a decent rumble at idle and got pretty loud at higher rpm. Pretty quiet cruising with od. i like to use the longest muffler that will fit. My wrangler is loud. Its rumbly at idle, and loud when you step on it but it's a very short system. All stainless, 2-1/2 into 3" magnaflow Y with a magnaflow cat mounted to it and I think and 18" magnaflow welded right to the cat and a turn down.
Also have magnaflow cat back in my wife's 4.0 wrangler. Some day i want to ditch the super turbos on the duster for magnaflows.
Who’s running Magnaflows? Looking to replace the Flowmasters on my truck. I’d like to get something not too loud, just want a mellow sound.
I have a pair of SS MagnaFlows on my 87 PowerWagon, kinda mellow sounding for what I really prefer, they offer no real back pressure, when they "go", I won't be replacing them with anything from MagnaFlow... IMHO the MagnaFlows are pretty much the same as the FlowMasters I had on my truck previously...
No experience with Magnaflow but I ordered a pair of Dynomax Ultra Flo in a 20" case for the Belvedere. You can give those a listen here in the next couple of weeks for a comparison.
I have run both the ultraflows and the magnaflows on my Hemi and hands down, I prefer the Magnaflows. They have a bit more mellow tone, not as harsh as the Ultra's. At cruise, it is pleasantly low key. I prefer quiet and stealth and while none of the straight thru's are quiet, the Mags are better mannered. I also have an X-pipe and that helps tone-wise.
I had a set of the early ,not stainless steel, 14x7oval with 3.0 inch side inlet with center outlet mounted at the rear bumper on my pump gas Duster I built in 2002/2004. It had a 400 stroker motor that made over 600 HP with a 6 pack set up on it, it was loud at WOT with them on , not bad at light throttle cruise It was NOT restrictive at all, my car only pickup .02 MPH and .02 ET in the 1/8 mile by removing the complete 3.0 inch system from the fenderwell headers back I'm sure the gain was the weight, not the flow gains I would buy several more sets of them if I could but I don't see them available anymore

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)
All about preference, you couldnt give me a truck load of the 40 series flowhackers, almost every chevy I see these days has them things. But again, its all about preference.

Lost quite a bit of bottom end power and the sound is awful. Big mistake, I'll never do that again.

The power issue is that the magnaflow is now flowing a lot more air out and has leaned out the mix, you need to have the computer tuned to dump in some more fuel or the poor mans method is to put in a set of 460 ferd injectors from the junkyard.
I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!
Requires some cutting, welding, & the installer will need to bend & weld some new rod hangers. On the Rams with this exhaust setup, everything lines up straight-on - there are no offsets. This is my truck & inside the cab there is a little resonance when going uphill or pulling a trailer (under load). Normal driving there is enough rumble so you know the exhaust is not stock, but when you put your foot into it it really sings. The setup does not sound like an old dump truck with holes in the muffler!
I had a single Flowmaster 50 series on an 01 Durango. It sounded great. It had a nice aggressive idle sound but mellowed out on the road with very little drone. That was running through the stock cat converter. Eventually the muffler rusted out and I needed to replace it. I went with a Walker Tuff Turbo because it was significantly cheaper. I was kind of bummed that I would lose that sound. I was surprised when I got the truck back and the sound hadn't changed at all. It still had the same aggressive idle and quieted down on the road. The stock muffler was humongous. Changing to a smaller muffler was what changed the sound more than the brand of muffler.
I’ve put mangaflows on my last 2 trucks (2010 with 4.7 and 2015 with 5.7) and I believe they sound the best. I go with the longer muffler for a deeper tone.
