This may not be news to some of you, but Dave Smith-ProTrans Racing automatics, has spent most of the last year or so, moving his operation out of Kalifornia to Waco TX. Lots of racers are familiar with his top quality work and the billet trans parts that he manufactures. He also does the 518 OD to BB conversions. I live in Houston and Waco is close to 200 miles away, which is close enough to drive to and I have had them build me two 727's in the last few months. Dave is a great guy, they have a super nice facility, and I am extremely pleased with the work they have done for me and the fast turnaround. He is also a Mopar racer. I am heading up there tommorrow to pick up my back-up trans. Just figured I'd let folks know and especially fellow Texans who are looking for a First Class, nationally recognized builder in their Home state. Lee.

Yep the taxation and rising cost of doing business is just not worth it in Commifornia anymore. Amazes me how many of the manufacturers stay there

And the lack of electricity
And the fires
And the traffic
Such a beautiful place, too bad!
That said, I liked living in Texas! Much fun 24x7!

Welcome to Texas! I am friends with him on FB and have been watching his 518 to BB conversion setup, especially for B-Bodies. He will have plenty of work/customers here in Texas, and I will most likely be one of them.

I'm pretty sure they are, I think I got one of their last 727 hemi street tranny before they closed the doors in Lancaster, CA. Dave had said they had been working on the shop in TX for several years in order to make the move as painless as possible, he had a lot of machine that I was not aware that he had bought I think the last time I was in his shop was 2002 or so. Call them at 661-940-7400 and see if there up and going or not

I understand why they picked Texas, but curious as why they picked Waco. Do they have family there?
I have always hoped to have one of their transmissions.
While it would still be a six hour drive for me at least it's doable. I hate turning over race parts to the shipping demons. We picked Waco because we wanted to be somewhat central to the state and there is a good amount of race tracks around. Also, we are now 3-day shipping MAX to anywhere in the USA.

Please tell us more about the 518. What cars will it fit? Do you have to carve up the floor? How strong is it? Good enough for say 700hp and good traction? What shifters can be used? Does it use a 727 converter or something special?
Thanks
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

My next project will be to have them build me a 518 for my RB 493. It will have to wait till next year though. Been in touch with Darren about this for my project also. He is making great progress.
