I have heard back In The day when these came out Maryland and Pa. would not license or title these cars because they didn’t have a front bumper. I understand they had to have a front bumper retro fitted with one before these states would. Has anyone ever seen a retro fitted bumper on a bird? I wonder how that was done.

I believe they got around this by adding a rubber strip to the nose.

. I wonder then if the dealers had to put the rubber on the nose and who manufactured the rubber piece since there would of been so few

The "rubber" strip was already part of the Bird's build, the Federal bumper law enacted for Jan 1970 was circumvented by building all the Birds by Dec 1969, State enacted Laws were another matter....

Maryland, DC, and Minnesota all had restrictions for these cars in 1970.

Ed Waldroff in Minnesota had a letter from Governor Wendell Anderson from about 1971 which Ed kept in his Superbird's glove box. The Governor's letter noted the lack of a front bumper. Ed had a Barracuda Bumper attached through the nose. Car is RM23UOA173766. DSAC had a picture of it in the mid 1970's.

Car is/was a black bench yellow car, poverty hubcaps and perhaps an AM radio. I chased Ed down and caught him on !-94 in the Twin Cities about 1976 when he was using the car as a daily driver.

I purchased this car from Ed in 1984. It still had the front bumper and bumper guards on it. I took the guards off right away, but was able to take a picture of the car with the bumper.

Wow...that’s the first PIC I’ve ever seen of one. So is that worth big bucks or is it the ultimate example of rare does not necessarily mean valuable? LOL!!!

Looks like some bracketry involved too.

I purchased my first T/A challenger in 1979. I proceeded to the CT DMV for registration and inspection where the car flunked due to the factory side exhaust. I showed the DMV guy the factory repair manual and explained the car came that way when new. He explained to me that in CT the exhaust had to exit behind the rear bumper and that he funks cars like mine and C2 corvettes with factory side pipes regularly. I went home, swapped the exhaust off my other challenger, passed inspection and put it all back. 13 years later Dodge introduced the viper and got CT to change the law so my T/A was finally legal after 22 years! Gotta love the states.

in Pa, it used to be rust holes were flunked on a regular basis, no matter how small. now i can see structural chassis components, but you should see the complete JUNK roaming the streets now allowed !
just getting CLOSE to some vehicles means your tetanus shot better be up to date !
some of these "safety" inspections are a complete joke, and have been a cash cow for many a moon. laugh2

my 99 "bus" [caravan] came from arazona, although it was bought new in Pa.
looks like new underneath, because it lived there until the original owner passed away, then his daughter brought it back.
it has beer dents, but the only mark it has from rust is in the bottom of the passenger's rocker where the factory foam is.
i blew a small square hole in the bottom, removed the foam, sprayed the devil out of that area and ahead inside the rocker as far as the gun would blow the oil, then quickly welded a patch on after the oil had quit running out. [a few weeks later]
every winter i oil it up, removing the tail lights and all the factory rubber plugs, plus the extra holes i drilled and plugged in all the doors, dog legs and gate.
this "should" be the last "bus" i need to buy in my lifetime. biggrin [i hope]

I remember my Grandfather putting masking tape over rust holes come inspection time. As long as there wasn't jagged edges, it passed

Thanks Aero426! Those bumper guards are just as ugly today as they were back then. The dealership that crudely installed the bumper was Chrysler City in Golden Valley Minnesota. It was on Highway 12 (394) just west of MInneapolis and is now a Menards store.
