Considering adding Hoop Steps to my ‘74 W200 with 33” tires.

Any recommendations as to brand, type, mounting, etc? Bully?

Don’t really want nerf bars or sideboards.

Thanks.

Most aftermarket steps I've seen screw into either the rocker or the floor pan and all cause rocker and floor pan issues with premature rust, or stress cracking caused by the pan or rocker flexing under the weight of stepping on the step. If I'm adding something I'm going to put my weight on, I'm bolting it to the frame.

I don't know of any modern steps that attach to the frame.

Back in the old days, the running boards bolted to brackets that bolted to the frame. If you don't want to use the entire running board, at least bolt up the brackets to the frame and put your small step on the brackets designed to support your weight. Gene

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I agree, simply bolting it to sheet metal would be asking for future problems. Will see what I can come up with to attach to frame.

I have nerf bars on my CJ5 (previous owner purchased/installed) which are fine and I like them, but for the W200 I want something simpler and less noticeable.

I agree with J Body, steps, nerf bars, running boards, whatever you want to call them make it extremely difficult to pick the vehicle up for service. Plus they ruin the flow of the lines. My 74 is lifted 4" with 32" tires. I just climb in. Getting the dogs in is a different story though. They are getting old and jumping isn't as easy for them anymore. Our new truck has the auto fold out running boards and I like them just fine but I could have lived without them just as easily.

In good part why I’m wanting Hoop Steps. Don’t want to ruin the lines of the truck. The Hoop Steps are not as noticeable.

I’m not sure it would be all that much more difficult to service the vehicle, as there is lots of ground clearance (compared to a car) The nerf bars on my Jeep have never been a problem with regard to servicing the vehicle and Hoop Steps cover even less real estate.

Can I get in without a step, yes, but it gets harder every year. Just a (minor) p.i.t.a. Plus, a step will help shorter passengers, etc.

My airplane has a Step...(factory standard)...

But you don't put your plane on a four leg hoist to work on.

I don’t put my Truck on a 4-post or 4-leg lift to work on it. Floor jack and jack stands.

Then it should be no problem. Just don't take it to a shop to have anything fixed the needs it to be put on a hoist. shruggy

So long so the steps are Bolted(not welded) on, they should be easily enough removed.

If I'm remembering correctly that step retracts with the landing gear, correct?
The last A35 I saw going through its annual did work
My Comanche didn't have a step like that, it might have help the little ones and us older ones getting in and out of it work We will never know now shruggy

Yes and No.

Yes, Some of the earlier V-Tail Bonanza’s (35’s) and Debonairs (33’s) had the retractable Steps, but the factory gave up on that approach (in favor of the fixed-step) long ago. You couldn’t even get it as an option to add to later aircraft.

I also have a Hoop Step on my Compact Tractor...

hahaME TOO! Wish I had a pic. I made it for my wife.
I suppose if you're open to some fabrication you can mount those to the frame or make your own and coat them. I bought a pair of nerf bars for my truck and they were almost useless for getting in and out. The problem was they need to be out enough and low enough to be useful. I fabbed the mounts for the front of these and the rear is a straight piece of angle across both framerails. No flex and was built on my 2 post lift.
