The Rio Grande MX track was actually owned by the same people as Rio Bravo if I remember correctly. Grande was short lived and was located on the south side of Houston near League City, going toward Galveston off I-45 and Bravo was off 59 North off East Mount Houston Rd and was the big track at that time.
And yes that was a Bell Magnum helmet with a "duck bill" visor, good eye. I also later added a face protector that snapped onto the front using 4 button snaps, mostly for roost protection and preceded the full face helmet. Bell's moto used to be "If you have a 10 dollar head wear a ten dollar helmet, if your head is worth more, wear a Bell". Gear has come a long way since then.

Still a fun thread... up

I'm going to see if I can find any pics from the past, most likely some racing shots from the '80s, and possibly a couple of Polaroid shots of bikes from then, or maybe earlier scope

Found this photo of me I think a week or two after my first motocross race when I finally got to actually practice. I entered my first mx race with no time on the Penton other than three trips across a flat field by the local high school and then a cop showed up and I took off. I went into my first mx race in central PA on a day they had every top east coast pro rider and at the time the current #3 in the 250 world mx championship a Czech rider on a CZ (of course) Mirroshav Halm there and Jack and Jeff Penton. I was so nervous and to top it off because there were so many riders (48 amateurs in my class alone 125 am) they limited practice for us to two laps, one sighting and one hot lap if you dared). I got locked to my friend's bike when he panic jammed his Penton into gear without the clutch and his bike jumped right on top of my throttle and pulled the throttle cable out of the throttle housing. I had to shut the bike off, pull his bike off of mine, restart the bike and at that point I was next to the last to start as he was the last rider at that point. Probably the best thing to happen to me in my first race. I felt I should be able to pass anyone in front of me up to a point because they couldn't be that much better as I felt I was new to the sport and slow but not last place slow. I worked my way up to 15th in the four lap moto having passed 30+ riders. I didn't know that I had done so well from the bad start but my friends all did and at that point I was hooked. The second moto I made sure I was as far away from my friend as possible and got a great start or for the first turn I did and then I saw only two riders in front of me and thought for sure I was following two riders that had made a wrong turn. I remembered hearing something about a second moto course change and thought they didn't and went the wrong way as there was no way I was in 3rd place........I was in 3rd and stayed there until a 1/4 of a lap from the finish and spiraled into the track on a just watered corner. I picked the bike up and finished 8th, I was really hooked at that point.

Sorry for the rambling, I was really going to write about the helmet I was wearing in this photo as I had to "borrow" an approved for racing Bell magnum helmet from my friend that talked me into trying motocross racing. His brother let him use his Triumph 650 "Tiger" so he bought a Bell helmet and painted it with the Flying Tiger P-40 "shark" teeth. Now looking back at my first race wearing it I was either considered a boob or noob for having a custom painted helmet or way, way ahead of my time for having a custom painted helmet.............I'm still thinking boob wink

BTW: Jack Penton on a Penton(KTM) 125 Six Days MX beat Halm that day and was the only one to do so. Jack's Penton 125 with the Sachs motor was so much faster than Halm's CZ, which were IMO one of the slower 125 MX bike built (not anywhere near the great performers like the 250 and open class CZ's). Jack told me that Halm was such a better rider than he was at the time and that he would leave him in the tight stuff. Jack would run Halm down on every straight section and on the last lap pulled up beside him on the up hill to the finish and looked over at Halm and kind of motioned an apology and accelerated to the finish line leaving Halm in his dust. Halm was so pi$$ed that he crossed the finish line and then "ghosted" his CZ 125 into a snow fence and then ran over to it as it was laying there and jumped up and down on it cursing in Czech and cursing at his Czech mechanic. That was after the first moto and because it was supposed to be the CZ 125 intro and Halm was beaten so badly and knew how slow the bike was compared to the Penton he didn't show up for the second moto. I was there to watch the whole ghosting thing, too funny now that I look back at it. Jack autographed my Cycle News article of that day of my first mx race up

You guys notice that currently in other parts of the world a (Primarily Chinese?) made clone of an early 80s XL Enduro Honda is common. Several chinese companies make a clone of that Honda 4 stoke engine. Lifan comes to mind. Many transplant a new clone 90cc-125cc or bigger engine into their Honda Trail 70.

Keep old mopars alive.

I found some stuff last night, although not specifically what I had in mind: some '80s-era riding pics, some old event programs, things like that... I'll have to see how best to photograph them, especially since some of the pics are small or not taken very well.

Still wondering where some of the other pics ended up, especially a few I should have from the mid-to-late '70s. scope

Event programs...
- 1982 US 250 MX GP; the year Danny LaPorte won the championship and my first trip to Una-effing-dilla
- 1983 Washington, D.C., AMA Supercross; the only year they ever had a Supercross around here; also happened to be my 24th birthday and some friends took me to the race as my present; David Bailey won
- 1984 US 250 MX GP; I think David Bailey won this one
- 1986 US 500 MX GP; the last time it was held at Carlsbad, and Ricky Johnson killed 'em
- 1986 L.A. Supercross at the Coliseum; another RJ runaway
- 1987 Motocross des Nations at Unadilla; a total slop fest, but Johnson, Ward & Hannah pulled off the win
- 1989 US 250 MX GP; Might have been the first time I saw Jean-Michel Bayle race
- 1989 Budds Creek AMA 125/500 National; the first year Budds held a round of the AMA MX Nationals

OK, time for pics of slow-azz me...

1983 or 1984 Budds Creek Open B: pics of first & second moto starts when the gate was at the bottom of a long hill that's not even part of the track layout today. I'm #276 on the 1983 Yamaha YZ490 hugging the inside line at the top of the hill both motos... doing my best Broc Glover impression.

1983 or 1984 pic from Rip Rap MX which was right on the VA / NC line. Only time I went there... another Open Class race on the '83 YZ490... pic is of me cresting a hill . Track seemed like it turned from decent dirt to Oklahoma dust bowl in about 4 motos, but it was probably more like.... 8.

1984 at Antietam MX in Hagerstown, MD. I'm racing a 1984 Yamaha YZ250; included both big pic and small one cuz I don't like how the big one was cropped.

EDIT: Can't get this pic to load oriented correctly, unless it's my phone.

1984 practicing at a local sand pit that's probably another townhouse development now. Not sure if these are really one sequence or three separate shots from three different laps that go together well.

EDIT: Another one that doesn't want to load right-side up...

A medley of pics mostly from White Oak Motocross Park outside of Fredericksburg, VA. There are 1983, 1985 and 1989 or 1990 shots. I know the one in the middle on the left side was the day I broke my left collarbone on the last lap of the second 250 B moto.

EDIT: I really have no idea why some of these images are loading sideways. If you click on them, I think you can display them larger and rotate the image.

1990 Budds Creek AMA National Amateur Day... racing Vet B on my 1989 Yamaha YZ250... got 3rd, as I recall, which was a good result considering the Amateur Days at the Nationals get really big rider turnouts.

Correction: Had to have been 1989 cuz my # was 27 in 1990. Between racing different districts and classes over the years, I can't keep it all straight now.
