Dang, Stu! I'm very sorry you have to go thru this again. Don't give up without a fight, because if anyone if anyone can beat it with a good attitude.....it's you! I laughed when I read the thing you said about so many different accents of people calling for garage door help. I'm sure you got a kick out of my hillbilly accent, and that's ok....lol. If we all were the same or sounded the same, it would be a boring world. Thanks for all of the help you have given me on my garage door.....you're the air traffic controller of garage doors all over the world. I will say a prayer for you, and I choose to firmly believe that you can beat this.

Thank you all for the incredible outpouring of support towards me and my family. I will rest easy know what a great group of friends i have made over these 20 years or so. wave

I have a question regarding the transfer of title of the road runner to my wife's name.

Right now the car is in my name only and what is the best way to put to put it her name name only from now on.

Do i "gift" it or "sell" it at a very low low price or ??? I wan to make it as easy as possible for her is my goal. She had an appointment next month at the DMV.

Thank you for any ideas.
Stu

In Ohio or Pennsylvania, you can Gift an item with minimum cost.

Do you have a will or living trust? Have her inherit the car. Or can you change the registration to include "and/or"?

In Washington you can gift a car once, very easy, no sales tax etc.

California requires an appointment for the DMV? Jeez. You should be able to select the best way at the DMV after a short explaination.
Take care Stu, this sucks.

Greg.

Call the DMV or go in with her. It should be pretty straight forward between family members.

You been married long?

May want to put a lien on the "gift". biggrin

A durable power of attorney would also be something you and your lawyer should discuss, and it must be implemented when you are of "sound mind", and from what others have shared, that might have passed years ago, I don't know. eek laugh2

California transfer to a family member is title transfer fee ONLY. So that part is easy. Sign the title over to Sally and sign a paper indicating the transfer. You don't need to go in, but I would suggest that Sally take care of that while you are still here. Title transfers can be done at any AAA office if you are a member. Otherwise there are other insurance companies that also offer that service.

California is also a community property state so pretty much everything you own is already Sally's if it was bought after you were married.

Should be pretty easy to add her to the title.

Everything the wife and I own is owned jointly. If one should pass the other still owns it with no attorney's etc.

When meeting with your attorney, I would strongly encourage both of you to get a will(s) set up ASAP as one never knows when something may unexpectedly happen. Without one the state will have their way and your heirs will wind up with a mess.

The DMV should be able to issue a new title with you and / or your wife for a new title fee & no lawyer needed.

We did this recently (my mom) she wanted to make sure any paperwork was easy when she leaves this world.

a will is an absolute necessity. [as one who has been slowly "getting around to it". hammer]
before my younger sister got too sick, she had me set up a will, power of attorney, made financial matters in order, etc. with my attorney.
when she passed, all her affairs were in order, which simplified the work i had to go through as executor of her estate, much easier than if she hadn't done so.
it was still tough [for various reasons], but would have been much harder if we had not done anything while she was still here.

Cancer sure is a funny sickness. The cure was worse than the sickness I told them more than once! And the stuff they give ya has warnings that it will give ya cancer.

Stu....if the lawyer seems to be pushing you and Sally more towards a trust instead of a will, make sure the 2 of you understand it well. The father in law of my buddy at work just passed away at 80 something a while back, and had set up a trust instead of making a will. He believed he was making it easier on his family by doing so. Turns out, it is going to cost $20K to get the trust administered! It has to be done by a lawyer, instead of someone entrusted to be the executor of the estate. The transfer of the title at the DMV should not be that big of a deal. It might be helpful to her also if you make sure the power bill, water bill, etc is fixed to where she doesn't have to pay a deposit to simply get those things transferred into her name. It can't be easy having to suddenly have to deal with all of this stuff. confused But seeing you here asking what's the best way to do this or that just proves that Stu is still Stu......doing anything and everything he can to make things better for those around him. Just like you always have. up
