So far we missed the power shut off, but in my area it would seem insane to turn it off anyway.

So PG & E, declares bankruptcy last year when they were found liable for the big fires . . . . So now this year, the utility (whatever they are called now), decides to black out/de-energize power lines, so as to NOT have that liablity . . . . WOW !!! . . . sounds like the lawyers sure do run that state - if the distribution system were properly maintained - think trees trimmed or removed along rights of way of powerlines, AND infrastructure (think old poles replaced, overcurrent protective devices - relays, circuit breakers, etc) were maintained to SHUT OFF possible short circuits . . . then power would be on and risk would be at total minimum . . . however, the media takes what they get told from utility and give that information to everyone - no power, to protect you ! . . . PHHHHTTTTT . . . . . oh, I probably forgot the greenie weenies that say "You can't cut down trees" !!! . . . .

What has happened to this world in the last 4-6 years ?!?!?!? . . . .

Rant off . . . .

OOPS - sorry, one more thought . . . for those looking to plug in a portable generator and keep the fridge/freezer going, etc . . . . PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - ENSURE YOU TURN YOUR MAIN BREAKER OFF !!!! . . . do not back feed into the grid !!!

And don't run your generator in an enclosed area where the exhaust can kill you. You hear about that fairly often.

I am wondering how smaller nursing homes are coping.
The many thousands of isolated personal homes caring for a disabled family member must be severely strained.

And I just read that some in power in this state have declared that ham radio is obsolete and want to remove that infrastructure...I'm not big on conspiracy theories, BUT...

I suspect the final risk to life from no power, ie no traffic lights, small generator sparked fires, etc, could be as great as the utility fires, if on a long term basis, but with reduced liability.

The people in charge in CA. are INSANE!

Guess we won't hear from our cali friends for a time.

Oct. 10, 2019
4 AMPLACERVILLE, Calif. —

Classes were canceled. Frozen foods melted. Hospitals switched to emergency generators. Blooms withered in florists’ coolers. Unused food was jettisoned at shuttered restaurants. Lines formed at gas stations. Cellphones faded out.

That’s what happened Wednesday when the state’s largest utility shut off power to millions of Californians in a drastic attempt to avoid the killer wildfires that have charred hundreds of thousands of acres, caused billions of dollars in damage and spurred cries for widespread change in how electricity is delivered over the state’s aging grid.

About 800,000 customers were expected to lose power Wednesday, leaving more than 2 million people without lights, air conditioning, computers and refrigerators. Gusty conditions are expected through Thursday morning, and PG&E fears windblown electrical lines could spark fires if power is not cut.

I guess all their windmills and solar panels are not any good without a good wire grid system to carry the electricity to the consumers.
Wonder how the greenies are going handle this.... They don't have anyplace to plug in their electric cars.

There is either a really bad management, or really bad restrictions when a power company has to file bankruptcy As sad as it is, I believe the state is getting some of the greaf it may have coming because of allowing the wrong people to run the place. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg. I feel sorry for the citizens caught up in this mess.

IL if doing its best to follow along in CA shoes, at the rate we are going we will be in the same boat in a few years. Gene

I am aware of the NO POLITICS rule so I will have to tread lightly on this despite the murky waters.
It is a sad thing to see a great state in such a poor situation. We pride ourselves on being a Tech Capital but with all the brilliant minds we have, many of us are in the dark because of some really corrupt leadership. You would expect a state like ours to be on the cutting edge of tech and electricity but here we are buying gasoline and candles, ice and batteries as if a tornado wiped out our power grid. I cannot fully blame the utility company. They may have tried to clear safe pathways and encountered strong resistance from the regulations and the tree hugger crowd. It is so strange that a state whose leaders are pushing for electric cars finds itself without electricity. What irony, what hypocrisy.

Not a conspiracy. Just greed as usual. They want to free up those frequencies so they can sell them for other uses.

Placing the high tension or high voltage towers closer together and increasing the distance between the conductors or lines would have reduced wind sway to a level where arcing and sparking were minimal.

But - that cost more $ in the initial design phase - more $ than was allotted to design and construction.

Between elected official's taking $ from PG&E to get a pass on needed maintenance and upgrades to the Sierra Club going to court and making it illegal to clear dead growth around power lines and transformers. The people at PG&E should have known they would be eventually be held liable.

Seems people want their cake and be able to eat it too. If you sue a company over fires caused by downed lines I guess the smart move would be to turn the power of when it gets windy. And they did and hopefully will continue to do so.

I thought I read early on that the Paradise fires were caused by outdated transformers blowing up ???

May be I'm mistaken shruggy

I do find it rather ironic that Calif. has had electricity for well over 100 years and this has just now become a problem ?? violin beer wave

Or, they put solar on their house, and now they barely notice the power outages.

Gas pumps don't work too well without power either.

Bad management by PG&E sure didn't help anything.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Here is an article by a former CA politician who decided to move to TX.
He lays out the history going all the way back to 1840s pictures of what rural CA used to look like, and why present fires are as destructive as they are, and also why zoning laws have sent home builders into fire prone lands:

Look all over our country example people building in flood zones , people building in dry fire prone hills , people building on the gulf coast , people building on fault lines kinda makes you wonder what people are thinking! panic

We spent 52 hours without electricity. We had hot water, so it was tolerable.
Greed and corruption are to blame for this mess!
Next comes the bailout. shout
