Looking for a little guidance on a build for a customer. Car is a 1970 340 Dart. Factory intake manifold. I'm stroking the 340 to a 416 with factory iron heads and a mild cam. Question I have is using the factory intake (because the customer wants the appearance to be as factory as possible, so that's why the factory intake) what suggestions does anyone have regarding the carburetor. It appears that the factory carburetor would have been a Carter 4935S, however I think finding one may be like hens teeth.

So, by "as factory appearing as possible", do you mean stock exhaust, etc?
If he wants #s matching & strictly correct, then the OEM carb would be the deal.
A step away from that would be an AVS off a 383 or 440.
A better but not OEM would be an Eddy AVS2: mainly because of the annular boosters and 50-years-newer casting & machining.
I just put a 650CFM AVS2 (manual choke) on an otherwise #s & date-code 383 and it's a better carb than the rebuilt 4426S that was on it.
Even the "satin" finish is shinier than the OEM, as are the linkages. The OEM AVS choke & peripherals can be mounted, and the Eddy logo plate removed.
But the choke linkage & operation is different, haven't figured that out yet but hasn't been needed.
Some tuning will be necessary either way, but once you interpret how the metering rods & jets work (the rod numbering scheme is backwards to me), it's all quite clever.

Thanks topside. Yes, stock exhaust manifolds, however he wants trouble free so that's probably a good suggestion. Maybe my eyes were deceiving me, as the intake is dirty right now, but it appears the 1970 intake manifold might be a spreadbore pattern?

It is not a “spread bore”, but it does have smaller primary bores.
I can’t recall if there is an interference issue with the primary throttle blades on that intake or not, when trying to use a larger carb, like a Carter/Ede 750/800.

Check the intake; should be casting # 3462848, part # 3462847.
The spreadbore intakes are pretty obvious.
The AVS2 650 fits perfectly on a stock intake.
I've used a stock 440 AVS on stock '68-'69 383 intakes before with no problems.
But yeah, if you're installing a carb with larger venturis/butterflies, you may need a short spacer or open the intake accordingly.

Thanks Dwayne. I thought it looked a little weird. I'm going to go with topside's suggestion on the Edelbrock AVS and hope it fits and the throttle blades don't rub.

A 1971 and up Thermoquad intake and a 440 Thermoquad carb will make more power and go faster if that is a consideration work scope

Thanks but I've had really bad experience with the last 2 Thermoquads built by a very reputable person. Not sure if it's the ethanol or what, but both of them have been failures. No doubt when it was right it was badass, however both of them exhibited horrible hot restart issues, and it was not from the fuel evaporation. One was for a customers 79 Lil Red Express and the other was for my 1978 440 Power Wagon.

If you have the non spreadbore intake I would use the 440 Avs. We ran mid 12’s with one on a 451 CI low block. Worked/Vanke stock intake, 906 heads and factory exhaust manifolds. This was in a 3900 lbs Super Bee. Good luck.

I’m going to use two of the 650 AVS2’s on my cross ram. I’m going to use the throttle arms off 3705 AFB’s to keep all the ratios correct on the linkages.
