Tested a Chevy 454 (Old LS6 engine with blower pistons and Dart heads) on the dyno last week. First time I've helped test a blower motor. Engine pulled a rocker arm stud out of the head on the first pull so that took a bunch of work to fix. Took a few days to repair the head and then we were able to get some good pulls on it. This is a boat motor so it was built really conservative. I think the compression ratio was 8.5 and it had 32 degrees of timing and a small flat tappet cam with 0.500 lift. It still made 700 hp and a ton of noise. I think it was the loudest engine we've ever ran on the dyno. Just starts to shriek once you get over 5000 rpm. Not so sure I'd like that noise in a car. The owner says he doesn't really hear it in the boat since you're going 70 mph and the wind blows the noise away. He does say that people up and down the river hear him coming.

Blowers are big time fun. I hear lots of long winded explanations of how terrible, and inefficient they are. Blah blah blah,,just something about them I've always loved. They're all in your face, your ears, and toss ya in the seat faster than any other adder.

The blower is run 10% over. It was making 16 inches of boost at 6000 rpm.

I think the owner said it is a V drive with a Powerglide trans and a prop

The torque was above 600 ft-lbs for the entire pull from 3000 rpm to 6000 rpm. I didn't print out the graphs but I think the peak torque was in the 650 range down around 4500 rpm.

No, we didn't have a temp gauge hooked up to the intake manifold. The air temp was fairly cold when we were testing. Correction factor was only 1%.

Maybe it's just me... but 700 HP at 16 lbs of boost seems a little lower than I would expect for an engine that size with aftermarket heads. Even with a conservative cam.

he said inches...everyone else is saying pounds...???

I think it's a bit more conservative than folks are reading into it.

I've been driving around with a couple different blown BBCs for 30 years, yeah, they're fun!

I've seen similar results on a LS6 crate motor with a small bore BDS 6.:71 with two Holley 650 center squirters on 91 octane CA pump swill back in the early 2000s shruggy
That motor had a set of the old TRW forged turbo pistons with a reverse dome(7.5 to 1 comp ratio) and a small hydraulic blower cam, it made 620 HP with 5 lbs. of boost at around 6000 RPM if I'm remembering correctly now. The customer wanted me to JUST check it out initially, physical inspection on the bottom end and a leak down test due to the engine being used out of a street hot rod(1 ton dually Chevy 4 door pickup confused) and then he had me dyno test it to make sure it ran and didn't leak. That led to him wanting more power so I bought two more blower pulleys to make more boost and loaned him a set of 850 B.G. Speed Demon carbs I had in stock and swapped the cam to a Comp Cams solid roller set up and put a gear drive on it per his buddy advice work Those changes ended up making right at 780 HP at 6700 RPM with around 12.0 lbs. of boost, the manifold inlet temps went from 130 F with the lower boost to 190 F with the higher boost levels shruggy It did make 700 HP at 7000 RPM with 7.0 lbs. of boost with a smaller blower pulley and his carbs jetted to the best power, he put that motor in a 1972 SS Chevelle he had and he loved it, it would smoke the tires pretty easily according to him shruggy

16 inch of Mercury? That make more sense. I was confused by others referring to 16 PSI.

Yes, 16 in of Hg max boost. Roughly 8 psi of boost.
