Reactive can be effective. In my line of work, I drive 100-140 miles a day, usually leaving in early am with my company truck, in rural areas. An “ incident “ is anything involving damage to your vehicle or someone one else’s property or person. Deer, tool dents, pheasant strikes, my personal favorite, backing over a rig anchor, automatic UA for anyone, bosses included. You come back “Hot” and your gainfully unemployed. Have witnessed it more than a few times. People see that enough times, it sticks. The hardcores, maybe not so much. In this sport, with the speed involved and the price of our toys, I’m certainly not against it. Jim.

Ya and the crazy thing about that was he went up for the test hours before he was required to thinking he was safe. At least that’s the story I heard

Stuff been around for a LONG time, but it is WAY stronger. Test it like everything else.

I really am disturbed about how this whole legalizing pot is working out. so certain states are making it legal but the feds are not, they are just looking the other way. And as said on most jobs if there is an accident, the first step many times is a drug test. And as said many drugs stay in your system for months after use, so we wind up with, the drug is legal to use, but if you use it, you can not hold a job or drive a car, or lots of other things. So we are creating an underclass of people who have no purpose except to use drugs. I really do not want to race against a person who is stoned or drunk. I have been racing since 1974, and I must admit a few drinks AFTER the race is something I look forward to. Sitting around and bragging or bench racing with my buddies while having an adult beverage has always been part of why I go racing. Lot of the guys I know I only see at the track as they live several states away. I think the track should have the right to test anybody that displays questionable behavior at a race, but with the delay in getting the results, it seems that is just a threat to ban someone in the future, after results are received. The best rules are common sense, its hard enough to drive a race car why would anyone try to do it drunk or stoned?

Never seen or heard of any racer doing anything. Spectators do get hammered during the larger races. Those are not fans, but guys who know next to nothing about racing and are there to see a wreck or an explosion. and of course spend the day with a buzz. I'd like to see the track just stop selling beer at all.

My brother has almost gotten into fights with drunks in the bleachers. The only reason he hasn't clocked someone is the track will ban you and he wants to come back. The 1 or 2 races per year Mr. drunk guy won't care if he gets kicked out.

a breathalyzer would be enough for tracks IMO. I see guys toasted racing ALL THE TIME.

I think that observation defines the problem. Are those buzzed guys having wrecks all the time, No, correct?
If I was buzzed, I would, and therefore I don't indulge,
I suspect most know their limits, only a few evidently, do not.

Or are just fuctional addicts.

You can be drink or drug tested here in the UK at the track.and I've heard / know of plenty of people tested for alcohol. Happens at every meeting. On another note, traffic cops carry a road side breathalyzer for alcohol and a wipe kit that tests for weed and cocaine.

I see drivers here locally doing stuff on the road that makes me wonder how they have lived as long as they have
I know several local drag racers that use weed on a daily basis so I'm sure there not really totally sober when racing
The pursuit of pleasure is killing our society and the lack of people demanding better results from there family members,friends and neighbors is not helping stop the slow decent into the sewers and gutters

Last time I was at Atco, they still had a full service bar, right in the pits.

Strange when you go through the pits at Norwalk you get a wiff of some good weed sometimes and that's OK with me as long as you don't get stupid with it. Personally I don't partake in alcohol or weed BEFORE the race because I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something bad happened on the track. I could see where a hit or 2 of alcohol or weed would relax a racer on the edge but I don't condone a mandatory testing of ANYTHING until it becomes a problem to others.

Nor do I approve of most any MANDATORY measures in a free society. But when being drunk at the track does "become" a problem, the results can be really bad.

Most tracks have published rules forbidding drinking or drugs by crew and driver while in competition. Some take them seriously, and some don't pay much attention. It is the track's responsibility to make an effort to keep drivers - and cars as well - from going down the track when they shouldn't be..

Should we do mandatory random substance testing at tracks? No, not any more so than frisking Grannys at the airport. But racers are generally wise to guys drinking and/or smoking dope at the track. They should be the ones insisting that these guys be parked. Tracks should also have "mystery spectators" walk around occasionally looking for any such shenanigans, and the track should enforce the rule. Just tell the guy to put it in the box with the promise that he will be watched and it will be for the rest of the year if he is caught again.
