Hey guys, I think it's time for me to replace my fuel pump. Do any of you have a recommendation on one that looks like the original but can take today's harsh fuel? The car is a '70 Challenger w/383 Magnum.

I bought a Holley manual pump and it is a carter pump with the carter name removed literally . I used 2 new carters that were bad out of the box so I tried a Holley and it is still working been a month now.

This is not instilling me with confidence. It looks like I need a Carter M4589 which I was happy to learn is still made in the USA. I just got of chat with their tech and they claim it's been updated for today's fuels too. Airtex has one that is supposed to be compatible with the new fuels as well, but a little research showed a lot of unhappy customers.

The Holley I bought had a warranty card if it goes bad. One thing good about it I can change one now taking my time in less that 20 minutes not bad for a man with 9 thumbs and a broke finger.

Well come on over and do mine! I've got a beer for you too. I'll bet you're using a Hemi fump? I can't seem to find a listing for a lowly 383 Magnum engined car.

Thanks for the links, Bee. I'm still inclined to use the Carter because it's the one I've confirmed is updated to hold up to the lousy fuel, and I can see they're using a more modern gasket too. Plus I like that factory name. How long has your Delphi been in service?

hmmm, so I got my new Carter in. But the install is fighting me. Do I need to pull out the push rod? For whatever reason it does not want to sit right when I go to bolt it up. Taking it off though was a piece of cake. Any tips would be appreciated!

You might have to bump the motor over so you can push the rod up some. might have to use some heavy grease on the rod to hold it up until you get the pump in and bolts started. Hope this helps.

Somehow I remember my last install from about 25 years ago and bumped it. No grease though. Fingers crossed no leaks tomorrow when I start it!

I had to bump one of mine and it went right in , the other two were no problem let us know.

You are a lucky cat. I don't remember it being such a pain last time. This time it took 3 bumps.

I have not started it yet. I'm almost reluctant too because I'll go nuts if I see a leak. But a few observations I noticed re the old and new pumps:

1) The one I pulled had a '68 date code. Could that have been original to my '70? I'm not sure if I reused the original when I went through the engine 25 years ago or I bought an NOS replacement.

2) The new Carter had no markings on it.

3) The new Carter came with 2 sets of green gaskets. They were poor. The bolt holes were too small so every time I'd go to secure it against the mating surface it would pull the gasket off the pump. Eventually they both tore so I went to Autozone that sold a blue colored one with the proper sized holes. I only put the gasket maker on the fuel pump side to hold it in place. I'm hoping just using it on the one side doesn't make it more leak prone. I did torque it to 30lbs spec so it does not seem likely.

I put the sealer on the pump and it hasn't leaked yet , one of the bolt holes was too small on one of the pumps and I reamed it enough to get the bolt in. I am sure someone on here could tell you about the date code I would hesitate to speculate because it can be hazardous to your health you get pounced on quicker than a doughnut at a big girl convention. I primed my carburator with a little gas to help the pump get primed good luck.

It started! I do my usual crank for about 10 seconds. Let it sit for 10 then pump it twice and crank again as my normal routine when I let her sit for a long while. This time since it was dry I had to do it twice, but it fired up no leaks!. I did get a humming noise scare when it first started that my mind immediately told me was a bad pump. Turns out I'd left my alternator belt a bit loose when I was tightening things back up.

Okay, for the fuel pump date code pros is it possible that 2 years prior to my build date is in the realm of possibility for a 383 car fuel pump or is it more likely a NOS unit I picked up 25 years ago?

More then likely it was a NOS unit you picked up along the way. Pumps that are 2 years before your cars build date is a long time. That's not normal.

I was leaning that way too, but I figured it's such a high production engine for so many years that maybe the parts for it were well stocked. Either way, I'm okay and I'll hold on to it.
