Hey all -

I've decided to take a road trip to visit my sister in Chicago. About a 24 hour drive one way. Just me, enjoying an unhurried trip. Thinking I will rent something fun to drive. Thinking it might be fun to rent a Corvette for a couple of weeks but my initial internet search was not productive. Anyone done this? Any other good ideas for a rental?

You'd better be sure you like the Corvette feeling or you'd be stuck in it for a long time. I liked renting a BMW 4-series convert, was fun driving. Cadillac ATS was nice too, never shelled out the $s for anything beyond those except for a Lotus Elise for a day in Vegas.

A few years ago I had to take some long drives for work. I rented a new Lexus sedan for the week. That was a fantastic road car. Kind of like driving a bank vault. Super quiet, plenty of power, handled great.

Friend of mien just rented a new Cadillac XTS for the weekend.
He told me it was easily the most comfortable car hes ever been in

Me personally would be thinking something along those lines or maybe a Chrysler 300

you might just go into your local rental car place and ask. I have tried to look for different vehicles before but have not been able to find them online, but I see people driving rental hemi challengers, corvettes, etc from time to time. I know enterprise wanted to upgrade me to an RT challenger once but yet I have never found that option online when searching.

My wife and Sister and law just spend some time in California. My Sister in Law upgraded the rental to a Porsche 911T, they had fun!

It's not like he's saying he wants to buy one. laugh2

Renting a car that you wouldn't buy lets you experience something different in life.

A Corvette could be a fun road trip, but I agree with sitting in one to decide if you think it would be comfortable on a long road trip.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

We have a 18 Mustang GT convert. One of the reasons we bought it was for road trips. It's comfy, has plenty of power, a good stereo, quiet with the top up,handles like a go kart, etc. Should be easy to find at a rental place. Just an FYI.....parking sucks in Chicago....something to keep in mind. Have fun on your trip!!

I'd go with a ragtop Mustang.

You need more room than a Corvete in case you stop at some wrecking yards along the way and buy a set of fenders or something !!

I would go with a Charger, been in a few and they are quite comfy. twocents

Ho-hum, may as well rent a Prius. Challenger wouldn't be bad though !!

Depends how tall you are. A Mustang is a horrible car to take a long trip in if you're over 6 feet tall. Corvettes are pretty tight too for tall guys.

If the trip was a Cannonball run, maybe the vette, but if you are over 50, plan on stopping to smell the flowers, take pics, eat, pee, and buy gas, you may want to consider the ease of simply getting in and out of your ride, whatever it is..

Besides, you ain't going to be hot rodding much on unfamiliar roads, unless you are willing to fly back without your DL.

For me, Fun To Drive is a pretty big deal, or you might just want to try something you can't afford to buy or something you're interested in and might buy.
A few times, I've rented a Charger or 300 for a freeway trip, and even the V6 handled it well, could run along at 90 just fine.
I'm sure a Challenger would be likewise.
Also depends on whether you have to carry a bunch of stuff or if you travel light.

I've rented a bunch of Challengers and Chargers - both are comfy and great to drive. I prefer the Charger - smaller doors open easier in parking lots. Forget the Camaro, didn't like it at all.

Chrysler Town and Country minivans are comfortable! I have seen 5.7 Challenger R/T’s at National Rental Car but it’s been a few years. Charger or Chrysler 300C’s are more comfortable...

One trip had me spending a few nights in LA then driving to San Diego for a few more. I rented a Challenger in LA and wanted to keep it the whole time. Thing was, LA pricing was a lot more than SD pricing so I ended up driving from LA to the Enterprise spot near the SD airport, getting out and turning it in, then popping into another Challenger for the rest of my trip. Took less than half an hour to swap from a black one to a silver one and saved over $150 laugh2
