What is the way to go on complete axle housing?
I’m building a 69 Valiant Street car with a 470 bb,looking to buy a strong rear end for it.
Have a 8 3/4 housing but no chuck or axles.
What are the best choices,Dana,8 3/4, 9 inch?
Not a race car but want something that will last.
What are my options?
As always cost is a concern.

A cool article by Dr. Diff with pinion comparisons at www.doctordiff.com/blog/tech-info/rearend-pinion-comparison/

The Ford 9" is a weak link.

You might consider haveing Moser cut down some C body or truck 8&3/4 axles to A body length. they'd be BBP which I am assuming you want. then a 742 clutch sure grip pig in the ratio you want.

At 300 to 400 dollars for new axles ( often with new bearings and wheels studs installed ) I wouldn't for a second consider cutting and resplining stock axles. By the time you procure the used axles and pay shipping both ways, you haven't saved much. If starting from scratch, you may be able to build a Dana 60 cheaper than a 8.75. Twenty years ago, it wasn't hard to find a used 8.75 center section with a good sure grip and 3 series gears for a reasonable price. Not so easy nowdays. 60 truck rears can be found cheap. It's possible that it already has the ratio you want. They mostly came with 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10. Housing narrowing if you cant do it yourself may cost $200. Axles, spools, diffs, etc about same price as 8.75. if your 8.75 housing is an A body width you could probably get $ 300 or so out of it.

Been checking out the Dana S60 but once you do all your specs the price goes up quickly.
I know a new complete rear is going to cost a good amount, just thought there may be a inexpensive alternative.
Looking around at all the rear axle builders it looks like you have to pay to play. Shipping is a big cost also.

Shipping runs approximately $235 to a freight dock or business address.

Yep, I went with Strange S60 with a Detroit locker, 3.73 gears, 35 spline axles, and wilwood disc brakes. I bought it directly through Strange about 10 years ago, before I knew about Cass at DoctorDiff
