My recently acquired 67 Belvedere II (see thread in the Member Projects & Survivor Pictures section) has a mushy brake pedal. After adding fluid and bleeding the brakes, the pedal gets firm after you pump it a time or two. I'm pretty sure I have all of the air out. Anyway, I asked two of my Mopar buddies and they both say it's the MC. Car is a drum brake car. Wondering if the reproduction ones that Mancini sells are any good or if I should look at other options? THis is the on I'm looking at:

You could probably get the same master from Rock Auto for much less.

First thing I would do is properly and manually adjust the brake shoes on all four wheels.

make sure the vent in the mc cover is open if pluged that can cause the prob you stated .

some have 2 vents 1 above each section in a doul mc. both must be open !

FYI - checked brake adjustment, they were good. Took a short drive and I now have brake fluid on the firewall, so it was the master cylinder.

are you concerned with it looking right or are you concerned with the quality if you got it somewhere else?

have you considered the adapter and the more modern master? if you aren't restoring or making it look stock that is.

I want good quality and for now anyway, I would like it to look right. I also don't want to have to redo brake lines right now. I might put disc brakes on it eventually, but for now, I want to drive it.

I got the single one for my 66 satellite from rock auto to have working brakes till I get my new lines done. I think it was like 17$ or something but that was 5-6 years ago. I'll let you know tomorrow if it's still working since I'm finally moving my car back home!

You might cap the MC ports with a pair of brass plugs from the Edelman fittings cabinet at your parts house (they can pull a MC there to ensure you are picking the right ones). With them in place if the MC is good (& bled out) the pedal will be rock hard with virtually no travel, try light pressure & a hard stomp. You can purchase a MC there & the fittings at the same time to save a trip back if the MC is bad.

pull boots back on wheel cylinders to make sure they are not leaking. minor seepage will not leak past boot but will cause a spongy pedal.
