I hate working on old production junk... I'm putting rear brakes on my 06 Jeep Liberty
and while pulling the drums and the lugs off.. those crap caps are falling apart.. I might
have bang on a 18mm 12 point
socket and some heat.. I hate this old crap.. already have a new Dodge on order.. should
be here in a month... rant off(for now)

We had the same issue on my wife's 11 Grand Cherokee, I bought steel lugnuts and replaced all of those crap capped lugnuts they use

We have a lot of trouble with those stainless caps, too. They won't take any abuse. But, to be honest, the real source of the problem is either over-torquing them or using the wrong sized socket. Keep the torque under 100lbs and use the right socket and the issues will disappear. Unless the lug nuts have already been damaged.

Master, again and still

Those capped lug nuts can drive a man to drink.

As much as many of us would prefer to get rid of them entirely...It sure seems like OEMs still love them and are making changes,
trying to make them work.

One of FCAs competitors made noticeable improvements to several of the capped type lugs over the last few months.
Several older part numbers were replaced with new ones, with the improvements called out on 2d prints/no getting around it.

on the capped nuts that i have had to deal with, i just take a sharp chisel and carefully split the cap, then remove it.
use the closest fitting socket to remove the nut.
sometimes it takes a rather small chisel to get the cover split when the nut is recessed into the wheel.
and it's not fun.

Some of the problems come from the uninitiated using a 12 point socket.
Recipe for failure.

I run into those caps, seems after a couple of winters the salt gets under the stainless and the corrosion swells them. I just split the cover and use an 18mm 6 point. Each car has a cheap breaker bar with both sockets.

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

Girls comb their hair in rear view mirrors and the boys try to look so hard....
