They did that to my 18 2500 before it was sold new to me. I would jump up and down and make them put a new one on it. When you go to get an alignment you'll pay out of pocket for a new one.

You'll pay out of pocket for arm that runs from the box to the tie rod. It will be welded and no shop is going to try and do an alignment with it welded. It's the adjusting sleeve that straightens the steering wheel after the toe is set.

The nuts do loosen.... even seen it to the point where one broke. Of course that guys was a work truck and no-showed three times for his appointment. Funny thing is that your steering wheel becomes waayyyy off center when this occurs. His junk was talking to him, but he wasn’t listening.... I tightened dozens of these before the recall came about. I had a couple friends do their own thing after telling them what the recall entailed. One drilled and tapped holes in the nuts and put set screws in. The other just tack welded a 1/2 inch strap from nut to nut that could be easily cut and ground off if he wanted to adjust it. Have had a few others just make sure they were tight and marked them to keep an eye on them. Even if the nuts are welded it doesn’t take too much effort with a cutoff wheel to make them “adjustable” again.

Half ass fix, probably a dealers way of doing it cheaply then billing dodge for the correct fix. I would contact Dodge directly and get the correct scoop.

The dealers charge Dodge to do the recall so its a win/win for the dealers. More money in their pockets. Dodge Corporation losses with every recall.

It really doesn't work that way. The manufacturer specifies the remedy and the NHTSA approves it. You don't want to get caught halfassing a safety recall. The liabilities could be tremendous.

There’s some pretty shady dealers out there. Last recall for suspension was on my 07. I asked one dealer what it entailed. Basicly needed the truck up on a lift to inspect the part. I ended up going to another dealer for convenience and all that happened is the service writer looked under the front of the truck and said I was good.

I called Dodge and complained, they ended up sending me to the dealer I initially contacted. Turns out the tie rod was bad and they replaced it. When I complained Dodge told me they were investigating the other dealer. That dealer sold out two years later.

Your story is full of holes Dart4.... but you only kind of sorta maybe know what the recall entailed between the two different steering styles that were on that truck, but hey it is your story.

The “fix” for the rod nuts might be hokey, but they won’t loosen..... remember that the next time you’re flying down the freeway that their could be a vehicle near you that suddenly doesn’t have steering. And corporate tells the dealers what to do when recalls are issued.

A problem is found, NHTSA notifies manufacturer, manufacturer reviews and submits a “fix” to NHTSA for approval, once approved manufacturer notifies public (law) and then dealer network. It’s not uncommon for you to hear of a recall before the dealer.... stupid, but that’s how it is. Makes us look as dumb as you think we are.
