gtx6970 - WOW! Quite a few good ones that got away there.

I have more:

Summer 1977 - I'm pumping gas for TOTAL in Plymouth, MI. One afternoon, a young married couple pulls in with their baby in a car seat in the back seat of course, & it's a butterscotch '71 Super Bee with a 440-4 bbl. Yes - a 440-4 bbl car (supposedly they never made any). Car had the louvered hood & brown interior & the car was NICE - no rust & all original paint except for the two front fenders. He told me they rusted out very early & his dealer replaced them under warranty, so they were not OE paint. Anyway, I asked him if he wanted to sell the car & he did - said he wanted $1700.00 for it. I didn't have the $$. Never saw the car again.

December 1978 - I was delivering windshields & other auto glass in Lima, OH. - making my weekly trip to some Ohio auto glass shops - Lima is as far as I went south. It's dark out - about 5:30 & I'm sitting at a traffic light & it's turning into a blizzard. Here comes a petty blue & red 1969 DAYTONA cruising through the intersection. I was dumbfounded & stunned - WHAT DID I JUST SEE?! Never saw or heard of that car ever again. I've posted this story on Moparts numerous times in years past, & nobody has ever acknowledged that car. Now even in 1978, Daytonas & Superbirds were legendary cars. If you were a gearhead back then, you'd remember whenever you saw one of those anywhere - they just stood out.

This Superbird with a trailer hitch - December 1981 in California - pulling into a gas station to pump a little leaded ethyl (outside of LA area). There are guys on here that know this car - white bench interior. It still exists!

There's a 1972 Satellite Sebring Plus in my burg, light green with the half-vinyl top in black, rallye wheels. I've only seen it a couple of times, and one of those was less than a decade ago.

62 Catalina Super Duty with the 421 and 8 lugs is somewhere around here. I've seen it at a show once. The car is dark maroon. I know the guy lives in my housing development(4000 people) as the only other time I saw it was driving through here on the road. Lived here 22 years but only seen it those 2 times. Rare as they only made 179 of them and it is in very nice shape.

When I had just finished the restoration of my 70 Charger R / T SE, my stepson s friend said to me,my grandfather has a car just like that, but his is nicer than yours. I said yeah right kid. Well as it turned out, the kids grandfather bought his 70 Charger R / T SE brand new, and it was a 32,000 mile survivor. It was a B5 blue 440 automatic car with a luggage rack on the trunk. I had the opportunity to buy the car when his grandfather passed away, but the timing wasn't right, and I didn't have a safe spot to store the near perfect survivor car. It ended up with a collector in New Jersey, and was often displayed in the survivor tent at the Mopar Atlantic Nationals in Englishtown.

A few come to mind. When I lived in Indiana there was a 67 R/T I saw a few times and then it disappeared one day, never seen again.
In Lexington, KY I saw a burnt Orange 70 RR 440-6 sitting in a driveway one time, never to be seen again. There was also a 69 Barracuda Convertible a few house down, saw it on/off for a while then gone.
Also KY, Yellow Rusty 70 Road Runner sitting in a parking lot, saw it two times then just disappeared one day, it was a good builder even with the rust.

Just this morning, 66 Charger Big Block on the way to work, white and looked nice. Flying down 127, first time I have seen it, hopefully not the last.

early '80s there was an Alpine white Superbird that sat at the local community collage for one semester. Never saw it after that.
When I was working 5- close at a local restaurant when I was just out of school, I'd see a white '55 T Bird about 2am. The guy would make one trip thru town. Never saw it in the daytime, just early in the morning when the traffic was light.
Same timeframe, a Winchester Grey 340 Demon with Cragars, usually in the early evening. Not very often. Local flipper got it and it vanished.
And a burgundy '66/'67 GTO. It would sit outside the owner's house Spring to Fall then disappear for the winter.Never saw it on the road. Shortly after I got out of school it was gone.

Around 1981 or so there was a black ’71 hemi cuda (not sure if it was the original color) in a single-car garage around the corner from my friend’s house. I think it was a 4-speed too, but I am not 100% sure on that. One day we were driving past the garage (it opened to the side street) and the guy was outside so we talked to him. He said the car was for sale and we asked how much - he responded “fifteen”. Being 16 years old at the time and looking for a muscle car, I thought there is no way is he asking $15,000 for the car – that would be crazy money. So with a puzzled look on my face I asked “do you mean $1500?” (because even though that would be extremely low, to me this seemed more plausible than 15k). Of course he said 15 thousand and my dream was quickly squashed. Never saw the car again after that. Years later I was talking with that same friend and he recalls the car being a convertible. I don't remember it being a convertible.

1982 - Cheyboygan, MI. I bought a roller '72 Roadrunner (no engine) from a young guy - it had the OE front boomerang spoilers & a rear go-wing. I wanted the spoilers, but the guy would not sell them off the car, so I bought the whole car for $400.00 & a buddy & I tow-barred it home. (the front spoilers shortly thereafter went to Year One to be reproduced & Len & I did some horse-trading for items I needed for my '71 Charger).

Anyway, while there doing the car deal, the guy had a buddy over & he asked me if I wanted a rear wing from a Superbird for $100.00? Sure I said - so he went home & got it - it was a DAYTONA rear spoiler, so that went with us. Then the real kicker - the guy that I was buying the RR from said his brother had a red '71 Hemicuda convertible over in his girlfriend's garage about 10 miles away & did we want to go & see it? My buddy & I are thinking yeah right - a 71 hemicuda convert - this should be good. So we said - sure - let's go take a look at that! He called over there & there was no answer, so we blew it off & got all hooked up to the tow dolly & headed 200 miles south to home.

WELLLLL - the '71 HC convertible turned out to be real as another Michigan collector found out about the car about a year later & acquired it, then pretty quickly turned it & the car was bought by Bill Drake in NY. Red with black top & interior. The car was a complete running, driving, original car that was very complete & pretty solid according to the guy in MI. that bought it. ALWAYS follow-up on leads even if they seem pie-in-the-sky!

There's a bunch... to say the least I know of. But in my own little world I was going to lunch about 6 years ago and on River Road and North Avenue in Chicago there was a 1969 Dodge Charger 500 in red going the opposite direction. I couldn't turn around and I never saw the car before or since at any cruise nights or car shows.

I've lived in the same town for my entire life, other than the first 6 years I was married (96-02). The guy who lives around the corner from my current house is the original owner of a 69 Shelby GT500KR. I have never once seen it on the road, and only once have I seen it in the driveway. It virtually never leaves his garage, and his garage door is rarely open.

E5 '71 Hemi Challenger in my home town. Black vinyl roof, console auto. A couple friends owned it through the late-70's/early-80's. Car disappeared for a number of years and re-appeared in the mid-2000's at my Grandfather's (Mother's Father) Transmission shop for a re-seal job. I found out about it MONTHS later...and he wouldn't tell me who/where, etc.

EDIT: Just want to add, that I wasn't looking to pester the owner, but more of a curiosity thing. Would have been nice to have seen the car when it was in the shop though...not like it was a super private deal, as the shop was the largest of it's kind in town at the time (four lifts and three extra work bays).

Same deal with a '68 Hemi RR, although I did track that car down...owner wants $85k...it's a nice "day 2" restored car.

Same side of the family wonders why I build my own automatics... rolleyes

Our office has been next door to the local speed shop for the past 3 years. I've seen plenty of cars that I'd never seen before or since pulled up there...

Most recent was last week: A 1962 Max Wedge Fury.

In St Paul Mn about1977 sitting in front of a old apartment building on East 7th a Sand Pebble Beige 70 GTX, car looked brand new, only saw it that one time. around the same time a black 70 GTX with a white gut sitting in a back yard getting picked apart, I should go back there but i am sure its long gone.

Also about 77 when I walked to school sitting on the street was a very rusty 70 RT Convert, Red, Black gut and top, Ramcharger hood, console auto, it was owned by a friends brothers friend, he sold it to a small dealer and they did bondo job on it and wanted 3k for it, too much for me in 80, always wondered if that car was still around and this year I saw it at a car show, and it looked great. it was the same car, talked to the owner and he bought it done from someone who had it since about 2000. going to check it out more later this year.

guy I was friends with in school bought a '68 Coronet 440. Southern car. We swapped out the 318 for a 383 that he had rebuilt. Got the dents fixed, had the car painted in the late '80s. I'll bet the engine doesn't have 500 miles on it, and the car hasn't been out of the garage this century. Has the '77 2 door Impala his Dad bought new. He got in when his mom quit driving. In the same garage as his Coronet...hasn't been out since the late '90s.

I was in school 1980 with a guy who had a real Mustang GT350 his dad pulled the driveline and put a 6 cylinder in it as he was danger behind the wheel and used tons of gas dad was paying for. Car was sold as-is as the original driveline was sold off well before the car. Car was all show and no go.
Be some FORD guy looked and looked for that stuff later on like we do.

Back in the late 80s in New Berlin Wi there was a guy who had a 69 or 70 GTO convertible. Red, nice car. One day out of the blue he parked it in his back yard, no cover or nothing. Drove by it for a couple years. My buddy tried to ask him about the car a couple of times and was chased off every time. Then one day....gone. It was pretty rough after sitting outside for 3-4 years.

Another couple cool sightings come to mind:

This would have been back in the late 70's - I was in Lathrup Village & a gas station at the NW corner of Southfield & 10-mile was a guy gassing-up an F8 green 70 Challenger R/T convertible. From just driving by, the car looked quite nice & stock, but no idea what engine. Definitely an R/T though. Never saw that car again.

Fall of 1979 - I was working for PPG auto glass distributor & filling in for the full-time guys when they were on vacation, so I was working a little of each of our 3 Detroit area locations. This particular week, I was working out of our east-side location. I had just left for a delivery & was driving south on Gratiot between 8 & 9 Mile Rd. It was a cool, rainy fall day. Here comes some guy up alongside me in a Plum Crazy 70 Challenger R/T convertible 440-Six Pack. Black top, interior, & side stripe - car looked stock & I could not see any rust holes, which was very unusual. I was honking my horn at the guy & trying to get his attention, but he was ignoring me. Car drove away - never saw hide-nor-hare of it again. I knew this was an unusual & rare Challenger - you hardly ever saw 440-6 hardtops, let alone a convert! A buddy of mine who was an east-sider his whole life & a real Mopar guy to this day, never knew of this car either. Wonder whatever happened to that one?

Any chance this was in NY? A buddy of mine owns a black '72 Charger 440, 4-speed, Dana, Sunroof Survivor. It's an incredible car.
