I own a 2014 Ram 1500 which I bought new and have 25,000 miles on it.

Have read about the roller lifter and camshaft failures that might occur after 50,000 miles or so.

Is this a random failure or has this happened in a good percentage of 5.7 Hemi engines?
Right now mine is running fine and I change the oil twice a year which is about 2500- 3000 miles between changes with me being retired.

I ran into a friend of mine who's a dealer tech and we were talking hemi. About the lifter issue, he said it could be anything from a vendor problem to poor maintenance. He said the vehicles he's done the repair on had poor maintenance history of intervals and proper oil. He was saying with the tolerances and high output of modern engines, oil is far more critical in terms of spec and quality than before.

Hylift Johnson has a lifter that will correct all of those issues. Jones Cams is a dealer for them as are others.

Bought my Sport 2011 brand new

However it only has 40,000 miles on it now , well maintained by me - Pennzoil syn and Wix filters

Hell I am still running the factory exhaust manifold studs with zero issues , knock on wood - Truck honestly has been flawless and spotless - Best thing I did when New was remove all four wheel well liners and go to town with Fluid Film and LPS 3 in the suspect areas
More then a few times now

Anyways

There I just jinxed myself - My neighbor a Mopar tech is mystified on the exhaust manifold studs with my truck

I bought my 2012 new and now have 203,000 miles on it. Mostly pulling a car trailer all over the country. I change the oil every 3-4 thousand miles. I have had the hemi tick since about 50,000 miles and the cam started chirping at idle at about 175,000. I switched to full synthetic oil and the chirp is gone for now. I still tow with it too. Still no fluid leaks, serviced trans once, changed plugs once, air filters and tires and put front brake pads on at 180,000 miles. Everything else is just as it was built. Best truck I have ever owned.

Does anyone make high quality replacement hydraulic roller lifters with MDS to replace the factory lifters? I believe the Hylift Johnsons are non-MDS only lifters. Looking for some stock replacements with MDS that are much better than what comes from the factory. I believe the factory lifters are made by Melling. I heard that Melling did a redesign of the lifters and that they are better than the originals. I don't know if this is true. If it is true, I don't know how much better they are than the original factory lifters. Isky makes a hydraulic roller lifter for the hemi that uses a bushing rather than needle bearings. I'm sure they're pricey, but would probably go a long way in solving the failure issue (unless you believe the cam is the cause). However, I believe that Isky's are non-MDS as well. Any insights/recommendations would be most appreciated.

I'm right at 340,000 miles on my 2007. No broken exhaust studs, no ticking. It uses oil but it is still running....

I have torn apart a bunch of these engines for bad cams (and other various reasons) and never seen one of the MDS lifters stop rolling and screw up the cam. I even double checked several bad ones still in my scrap metal bin and all the bad lobes on those 3 are NOT MDS lobes.

I have a 2013 Chrysler 300 5.7 with 121,000 on it. The oil has been changed every 3500 to 4000 miles at the dealer. I just took my son back to collage this past weekend and the engine started to have top end noise (taping ,ticking). I did not take the valve cover off yet, But from what I have read on this seems to be bad lifter and cam issues.

HotRodDave,

Do you think a stout and reliable MDS set up would be to keep the factory MDS lifters and replace all the non-MDS lifters with stronger aftermarket lifters?

I am looking at buying a used truck and found a 2014 RAM with 60k on it. Very worried about the lifters dying as several youtube videos imply it's all a matter of time before they go.

Might but a Chevy with a 5.3 instead, but the 6 speed transmissions in those have issues as well.

Ugh!!!

the 5.3 does the exact same thing and the trans is pure garbage, at least dodge seems to have put the majority of it's trans issues in the past

I'd kill for a clean Dodge truck with a 5.9 magnum with low miles, but they are all used up where I live.

Won't buy a Ford truck so it's a Dodge or maybe a GM second choice
