Montana Craigslist. Kind of strange. Looks to have a/c, clock, but just am radio and 3 speed with o/d manual trans. Kind of a cool car for maybe a daily driver. Priced right it seems. Looks like it might be bubbling under the vinyl top.

It's only odd because it survived all these years.

Way back about '95, I was pulling parts off an Aspen Wagon. It had the full woodgrain, luggage rack, AC, etc, etc, but had this same trans setup. Odd?

EDIT: not the same wagon, but looked just like this:

What's the reason that this trans is referred to as a 3 speed with OD, as opposed to a 4 speed? I've never heard any other manual OD transmission referred to in this way...never heard "4 speed with OD, 5 speed with OD," etc...I'm just curious. shruggy

I've heard it mentioned that way too a bunch of times too, not really sure why.

Maybe writings like this from allpar are part of the reason?

"The 3.09 first gear of the former 6-cylinder cars remained intact, but third gear was changed from 1.40- to 0.73-to-1. That’s right, third is overdrive and fourth is direct. A simple flip of the gear lever on the side cover gives the driver the illusion of three normal speeds and a fourth that is overdrive."

Same here. Asking $1500 so possibly could snap it up for $1200 ish. Hard to go wrong. Those four speed setups go for hundreds, not that I would part it out.

It would be a great stable mate for my 1970 4-door Valiant with the 3-speed stick.

My father purchased a new 1975 Plymouth Valiant 4 door. It had a slant six with a 3 speed on the floor with over drive.
The factory shift knob had the reverse, 1st 2nd 3rd and OD on the top. Original window sticker listed the trans as an over drive trans.
When driving the car you could tell the difference when shifted from 3rd to OD, RPM dropped

When I was a kid I remember my dad driving a 76 Aspen wagon, brown, /6 with 3 speed od trans. It was rusty but always ran, not sure if the front fenders were ever replaced under warranty as the tops were completely gone.

My Dad drove a brown '77 four door sedan, "Super Six" automatic. No rusty fenders, but the floors rusted eventually. I was a little kid, but I loved that car. It rode so nice compared to earlier cars. That "big car feel" as Chrysler put it.
