So I'm getting my Scamp ready for body and paint....and have big question(s). When doing a paint job with a mix of gloss paint and satin black paint finishes, what are all the in's and out's of painting and caring for this type of paint job? Does the satin black need some type of satin clear coat to seal and protect it, same as a gloss paint gets a gloss clear coat? How do you care for these when you have gloss with satin stripes/graphics? How do you wax it? Are there products out there that do both finishes? Photo below shows exactly what I'm after except no go wing. Love the satin look on black stripes over all gloss...but proper painting and care is a concern. Much appreciate any input!

I’m partial to the blue colors. Kinda a good coating while you work on the mechanicals. The satins actually look better on the older cars, hot rods, rats etc. Yes, the black satin is popular but I don’t see it loosing popularity since I’ve seen many cars still running it.

Probably going to do it on my '66 Charger I love the look and it will never be worth much anyway. Plus, I don't have the money for a nice paint job anyway. boogie

Surface prep for a satin finish is no different. Flaws will show up just the same. Why cheat yourself out of a decent shine?

I’m thinking of that Destroyer Gray leaving it in flat. Maybe add a little patina.

They have a cleaner that works on both finishes, as long as the satin is a catalyzed paint.
I used the Summit urethane hot rod black.

Did you guys actually read the post before dumping on it? The OP is asking about a COMBINATION of satin and gloss. How is this "played out" since many mopars had black hood treatment from the factory that wasn't gloss???

Wow! I didn't know my paint scheme is "played out" and out of date?

As for a combination of flat and gloss, I think it can be tastefully done. Two tone with a flat bottom and gloss top or gloss accents!

Go for it.

As far as waxing, there are spray-wax products on the market that don't chalk up satin finishes.
I remember BMW warning buyers of their satin cars to avoid bird droppings at all costs, but that's a different clientele.
Depending on what the OP is doing, might be easier & less spendy to use a matte decal/applique/vinyl wrap instead of paint.

I like the subtlety of a black matte stripe or hood patch on a gloss black car.
Plenty of other things are done to death in my opinion, but we can have another thread for that.

I use rat wax on my 47 desoto, they have a wash and spray detailer but no wax. My paint is rustoleum flat black and I can say it scratches very easily, if you run your finger nail over it it scratches. Expect to have people ask “what color are you painting it?” Then tell them flat black.

Okay, I'll play along with that.
Before the Charger, I had never owned a red car. MY '84 Chevy truck was red but all of my cars then and prior were other colors. I wanted red for this car.
After the paint, after the build, I started seeing RED on many other cars. For awhile in 2015, I considered a color change to B-5 Blue. Yeah...I considered stripping the car down and changing the color entirely. I still ,love the blue.
To make nice with the crowd, I'll concede that those that already have the satin paint are exempt from my opinions...They chose their colors when the trend was on the upswing.
Bell Bottoms and tye dye was really cool at one time and in some cases still is BUT I respect the pioneers more than the guys that jump on a trend too late.
Oh, just to annoy John...Destroyer Gray ?? I see these cars in that color and just cannot see the appeal. It looks like clearcoat over gray primer. Is this a Military sort of thing? You guys see the cars in the gray and reminisce about time in the service? If so, I respect the service but gag at the color!
Your car, your choice but jeez....
