After wanting to get a newer Chrysler for years I finally had a good excuse and got a 2014 Charger pursuit drive Just wondering for everyone that owns or works on these newer hemi cars what's the best kind of oil to use? I keep seeing horror stories of bad lifters and wiped cams and don't want that happening. I know using the proper weight in them is important but synthetic, regular oil, is any brand preferred or anything to avoid?

bad lifters and wiped cams tend to apply to old school flat tappets cam and lifters, not modern roller cam stuff.

Just use what he owner's manual says to use and pock a quality brand that meets OEM specs.

It is not that new but I have a 2007 Magnum R/T with 176,000 miles that I have driven since it was new.

I have used he factory recommended weight oil (5-20w I think). I have used mostly Mobile 1 and have had zero engine issues.

It does tick occasionally but I am pretty sure most of this vintage Hemi do.

I don't know, maybe I'm wasting my money, but they do have some independent testing to back up claims, so I use Quantum Blue oil and filter. I guess if nothing else it makes me feel good lol. Maybe do some research on his lubricants and see if you're sold. up

Isn’t oil quality and changing requirements for the proper operation of the MDS system ?

Any engine that has been out awhile with millions of units in service will have a few that fail.
I have almost 340,000 miles on my 2007 Ram 5.7 and I use regular 5w20. NO synthetic, no blends, just straight, conventional oil and a WIX or Mopar filter.

Many of the engines equipped with DOD(or GMs AFM)have had cam/lifter issues(yes they are roller cams). I agree with following the owners manual.

If it's a Hemi, 5W-20 is mandated because of the MDS. If it's a V6, there were some problems with cams/cam followers (The Pentastar Tick) that might be related to oil type.

It's a hemi. I"ve never had problems with my 04 ram one either but seems like later ones had some issues? Hopefully the responses so far means there's noting much to worry about.

It should say right on the oil fill cap.

First generation non-VVT had a reputation for valve seats falling out and broken exhaust manifold bolts (last one primarily on truck engines).

VVT Hemi (this one) has, over time, developed a reputation for failed cams, lifters, and timing chains.

Pick your poison laugh2

Whether these are a vendor or parts quality problem, or a maintenance problem or what, I just don't know.

You should be able to download the owner's manual from FCA or Dodge's website. Look for a specialized "pursuit" manual first
and see if you can find anything there. If not, the the regular owners manual will tell the tale.

Certain early non-vvt models specified mobil 1 10w30 per an owners manual addendum, but that was before FCA jumped into bed with
SOPUS (pennzoil), and being out of the loop since 2013 I'm not sure if any different recommendations exist for pursuit models anymore.

If you get a healthy one, and get an oil analysis or two, you will see that they are usually pretty forgiving and easy on oil. Other than MDS system
functionality they don't seem to be very picky.

He clearly wrote that he knows the proper weight.

He was looking for any suggestions on brands and any experiences with particular ones.

There did seem to be more issues, for whatever reason/reasons with the 2011's 5.7's and lifters/cams than others.

As far as dropping valves the '09 and up Eagle Head engines greatly reduced that issue, and these are good engines and with proper maintenance will go a long time.
