Tucson AZ,
Hey guys, hoping I can get some input on cam selection for the 413 I'm putting together. I have 3 different cams sitting here but don't know that any of them are really a good fit for it. Trying to decide if I should use one of them or get something different. Engine specs and cam details as follows...

413
.040 over flat tops (approx. .080 below deck, have not confirmed compression yet, maybe around 9:1...)
Stock Stroke
452 heads 2.08/1.74 valves, mild porting
Valvetrain to be OEM adjustables or stamped steel depending on cam selection
Intake will either be M1 single plane, TM7 or M1 tunnel Ram
Carb will be 825 Demon or (2) Holley 660's
4 Speed Transmission
4.10 gears w/30" tire (eventually may go 4.56 or 4.88)
Vehicle weight (3500 +/-)

Cams on hand...

Lunati Voodoo (Hydraulic) - Adv 268/276, 494/513 lift, 226/234 @ .050, 110 LSA.

Crower (Solid) - Adv 304/318, 555/561 lift, 262/274 @ .050, 105 LSA

Hughes (Solid) 246/252 @ .050, 555/572 lift, 108 LSA

So what says the experts? Use one of the above cams or choose something different like??? work

As always, appreciate the input. -Trent up

I would use the Crower and install it around 99 to 102 ILS devil
But you ain't me so I would advise you to use the Hughes and install it between 3 to 6 degrees advanced on the intake lobes twocents
BTW, that combination should make a hoop more torque than HP, tire smoking torque boogie shruggy

iagree The Hughes cam seems a good fit to me. Like Cab said though, if it was mine, I'd have to try the big Crower just to see. If nothing else, it ought to sound nasty!

As a guess: you have 3/16" quench clearance (.080" + gasket thickness + open chambers), not a good thing.

Of those three, I’d run the Hughes.

Definitely the least qualified of the above posters, but I like the Lunati. Based on the low compression and already having the stamped rockers. Also no need to break out the 4.88’s smile

What are trying to do? Street car or race car? It isn't going to be much of a race car with low compression and cast iron heads but a couple of those cams are going to suck to drive on the street so I have no idea what you're trying to do.

My reasoning against the Lunati is it’s a fast rate hyd cam........ meaning, it will likely be floating the valves right when the intake manifolds just start to really get going.

Ideally, something like a Hughes 3438 solid would be more in line with the rest of the parts.

Tucson AZ,
Just to clarify a few things...

I bought this 413 off Craigslist months ago basically to snag the adjustable rocker arms off of it. Upon further inspection, I found it had been rebuilt (Early 70's as I recall) but never fired up. It also had the Crower cam spec'd above installed. I decided to clean it up and run it in something just for kicks. With the F100 needing a motor now, I decided the 413 would fit the bill until I decide what direction I want to go with the truck long term. That being said, I'm not expecting this to be a "Race motor" or a "Street Motor". I'm expecting it to be somewhat obnoxious on the street and slower than I'd like at the track. Not ideal, but it is what it is.

The cams I spec'd above are just what I have laying around that seemed most fitting for the application. The Lunati came with the truck when I bought it and I planned on installing it in the 383 in the near future but that ship has sailed. The Hughes was purchased years ago for another 440 that I have yet to complete and obviously the Crower was somebody else's choice for the 413 years back.

Honestly, I'm not set on using any of those cams and am not opposed to buying "The Right Cam", whatever that may be. I know there are alot of people on here way smarter than me which is why I come here for input. I guess at this point I'm wondering how much power I'm potentially leaving on the table based upon making a cam selection for this motor. Is it justifiable to sell the Lunati for example and buy something else or are we really just splitting hairs at this point? shruggy

If the Crower is still in the motor and degreed properly scope I would try it, you may end up being impressed with close LSA camshafts devil work

Okay so you have a low compression, stock stroke 440 with cast iron heads that you are going to use in a truck. If it was me I'd send one of those cams you have (or a suitable cam) up to Ken at Oregon Cam Grinding and have him grind an RV cam. It doesn't sound like it is a race car and it is going to be a slug of a street car if you put very much duration in it.

I think I would get a dual plane intake and put a mild solid cam in it. Something spec'd to run strong from 3000 rpm up. I would also cut the heads some and use a .022 shim gasket if you can still get them. Even a stock 440 4bbl intake might outperform those single planes if you stay with a 4.10 gear!

This one? Crower (Solid) - Adv 304/318, 555/561 lift, 262/274 @ .050, 105 LSA

Well, it'll probably sound cool at idle...

In all honesty, you guys may be right. It may be a disappointment, but I had it sitting there and I just figured why not. I'm not above admitting I'm wrong or opposed to tearing it out if it sucks. I'm not sure it's the cam I would have bought if I was going to purchase one but for what it is, it'll be a learning experience. My hopes are that the truck will have a ton of low end grunt and hopefully lay down a low 12 with this setup. Not really asking alot of it. Eventually I'd like to build something more "correct", but in the meantime, this will have to do. I'll report back with the results when it's running. Thanks again for all the input guys. I appreciate it even when I make the less than desirable choice so thank you all. wave -Trent
