I am having a friend rebuild my trans, It has a steel drum from CTS, Griner manual reverse valve body with trans brake, bolt in sprag, behind a 650 hp big block. What mods should he do? What are the clearances should he set the clutches at? What are the band adjustments? Type f fluid. Any mods to the case? Any info would be appreciated.

He is a trans guy with his own big shop.

You need one of the old Mopar Hi Po manuals on building the 727 for drag racing scope

I don't have time, I am wanting to go racing this weekend. The guy has a large trans shop building all different kinds of trans, I just want to know some does and don'ts.

Clutch clearances can vary but usually between 0.12-0.15 per clutch disk is a good start .

band adjustment depends on what lever ratio you are using and how many return springs are in the front clutch piston.

Type f fluid is good to use just keep an eye on the condition after going to the track.

Not much you can do with the case other than make sure you have a good shield in case of an problems.

Yes he has rebuilt tens of thousands trans of every kind from powerglide to large allisons, and ZFs for over 20 years. He is not an expert on building "race trans" (torqueflite). He has built many torqueflites and other similar trans. I am just asking for any tips in building a "race trans", thank you.

Vent on the pump been plugged and relocated? Any Griner brake I ever had (3) didn’t require an accumulator piston.

....and some more tasty tidbits. http://www.tcsproducts.com/media/uploads/user-files/12-22g20_Griner_Trans_Brake1.pdf

Make sure your torque converter is built for trans brake use.
I prefer the steel front planetary, but the aluminum one will take some abuse for sure.

I’m no pro by a long shot.... but here was a fun beer night at the track in Al’s trailer using a swap meet core to get Don to 1st round of quick 16 in the am.... smile

I have a Dana 60 with a power-lock. I was told a couple of times that during a burnout only one wheel was spinning. When we took the trans apart the bolt in sprag was damaged and the case was damaged.

Could the power-lock slipping act the same as a drive line failure (shock) and cause damaged to the sprag?

Yes, slipping and grabbing, no load then gripping is what will do you in.

I’m “assuming” the steel drum noted in his first post is a “TCS”...... at least, I’m hoping!

Yes it has a TCS steel drum.

We are putting a new clutch kit in the power-lock while we are at it.

I have told my grandson that I would go back racing for two years. If I race any longer I will put a spool in it.
