how much slop is too much in a roller timing chain ?
in my "stuff", i came across a roller [single bolt] timing chain set that looks good.
if i bolt it on a block, how much slop [chain stretch] midway between the sprockets, is too much to be a good set ?
TIA as always ! bow

If it is not tight then look for another, better chain if yours has more than 1/4 inch deflection each way max new twocents

What Cab said, you'd about need to mock it up & I'd see how many crank degrees of slop there is & installed & just pressing in/out on the 2 long stretches between the two gears might give you a good ballpark indication

On the tension side I would think you would only get 1 degree on the cam from stretch but ya you gotta fit it to see. What styl chain,True roller or ?Anyone test a geardrive for slop?

On one 440 years ago I tried two sets, same Direct Connection part number, just 1 bolt, nothing fancy, sealed in shrink wrap.

First set had over 1/4 of slop in the chain, no good.

Second set was perfect and I used it.

Later I sold the first one with an apology, and the guy said it was perfect on his engine with no slop at all.

shruggy

Was the problem the timing set or the engine?

Some would say it doesn't matter as long as a home was found for both parts.

Align bored blocks will often result in loose chains.

I have had good luck with the 440 source timing chains fitting without slop.
Put an Edelbrock timing set on my 383, and it was loose when new.

It was a virgin 1973 production assembly in my case, date coded bearings and all.

Not that it matters any, but I sure found it odd at the time.

Fatal: install it, and check the slack in several different rotations. If they're different, the chain is toast.

Some input on this.Align bored blocks when done by a "skilled" machinist have virtually no effect on crank to cam centerline. Now align honed does effect crank to cam centerline but again when done by a "skilled" machinest cane be done many times that would have minimal effect on timing chain tension. Have used many, many so called quality timing chain sets of many types. Some good, some bad.Best timing chain sets i have used are PRO-GEAR hands down. My 2cents

well, i installed this gear set on a 383 that was on the rack with the timing cover off.
i'm happy to report this set had virtually NO slop on either side. boogie
so now, it's bagged up and on the shelf for future use.
sorry my old brain keeps forgetting things. thanks all for your helpful responses ! bow
