how much slop is too much in a roller timing chain ? in my "stuff", i came across a roller [single bolt] timing chain set that looks good. if i bolt it on a block, how much slop [chain stretch] midway between the sprockets, is too much to be a good set ? TIA as always !

On one 440 years ago I tried two sets, same Direct Connection part number, just 1 bolt, nothing fancy, sealed in shrink wrap. First set had over 1/4 of slop in the chain, no good. Second set was perfect and I used it. Later I sold the first one with an apology, and the guy said it was perfect on his engine with no slop at all. Was the problem the timing set or the engine? Some would say it doesn't matter as long as a home was found for both parts.

Align bored blocks will often result in loose chains.

Align bored blocks will often result in loose chains. It was a virgin 1973 production assembly in my case, date coded bearings and all. Not that it matters any, but I sure found it odd at the time.

Fatal: install it, and check the slack in several different rotations. If they're different, the chain is toast.

well, i installed this gear set on a 383 that was on the rack with the timing cover off. i'm happy to report this set had virtually NO slop on either side. so now, it's bagged up and on the shelf for future use. sorry my old brain keeps forgetting things. thanks all for your helpful responses !
