We dyno tested a 508 hot street engine the other day. This is a 10:1 pump gas engine with Trick Flow 240 heads, ported Victor intake, modest hyd roller cam and a 850 double pumper. This engine ran great, nice and smooth with no leaks. Made 615 hp and 645 torque so it will be a handful on the street. Going in a 1970 RoadRunner with a four speed.

Should be fun, what header size? 1 7/8 to 2?

The headers in the picture are the small dyno headers. They are 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8. The owner of the engine was trying to decide between 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 headers so we ran them with the small ones. Still made plenty of power.

I think the cam was 241/247 with roughly 0.600 lift. It was a custom Comp hyd roller using some of the "fancy" lobes out of the lobe catalog. I didn't take a picture of the dyno sheet. Power peak was in the upper 5000 range, maybe 5600 or 5800.

This 508 is very similar to the 496 that is in my Coronet. Same pistons, cam family, heads, etc. The 496 in my Coronet had peak power of 613 hp at 5800 rpm. So these aren't high rpm race engines, they are performancestreet engines which still manage to squeeze out 600+ hp. Of course you could race the engine but you wouldn't want deep gears.

This is what I built!

Love this engine and the torque it has! 3.54 gear and a tight converter suit it well.

'63 Dodge 330
11.19 @ 121 mph
Pump gas, n/a, through the mufflers on street tires with 3.54's. 3,600 lbs.
10.01 @ 133mph with a 250 shot of nitrous an a splash of race gas. 1.36 60 ft. 3,700 lbs.

Cool build! Very similar to mine too. Seems hard not to make 600hp w a 500 and tf 240s, but I’m sure it’s possible smile

Curious why the victor intake vs the TF intake? Do you think one is better than the other? Also Andy, do you happen the know the height differences between the two?

We would have used a Trick Flow intake but they are on back order everywhere at the moment. Evidently Trick Flow is moving their casting vendor or something.

Nice. A tried and true combination after all this time.

Yeah, I'm pretty comfortable telling a customer that if they buy these parts they'll have a 600/625 pump gas engine. The Trick Flow 240 heads seem to be the key part but matching them with the correct pistons, cam, and intake is what makes it happen. The good news is that these parts are all fairly easy to source.

Hey Andy

What rockers did you use and did they need any work to correct the geometry?

That cam spec is almost identical to the Trick Flow cam. work
