I thought this 68 Hemi Road Runner would have went for more... looked nice to me.
Hammered at $71k while I was walking around... only $1k more than the Blue '69 440 RT Charger that sold earlier in the day. I've been looking for an A12, but might have given 69-70 for that private sale, if I knew it was for sale & looked good under closer inspection. I didn't comb over it, since I figured would go much higher. It's the same color as a 68 I once had with only 14k miles on it & a Richard Petty signed truck lid... that the kid I sold it too destroyed 35yrs ago. So have a soft spot for blue 68's smile

I bet Werner is going to be smashing furniture after he realises what a bobble Mecum did with his collection.

Still not sure why he drug them up to Harrisburg instead of selling them in FL at the bigger Kissimmee auction. I can't imagine the higher entry fee's at Kissimmee would matter to a big time collector... Maybe he thought he'd snag some rich New York'ers... unfortunately all their spare cash is going to paying sky high NY Taxes with no more SALT deduction. whistling

less than $3M bought the above listed 12 cars (on a $7.8M - $11.1M estimate) a lot of educated guessing (or wishful thinking) must go into those estimates hammer

& the Petty 'bird bid to north of $3M "reserve not met" panic sounds like a level & honest playing field

Unfortunately, what the cars are WORTH - in terms of historical significance - is honored only by those who appreciate that, and that's a small market.
Race cars typically can't be driven around, so to most auction buyers they don't make enough sense to spend big money on.
The big money now would rather have something in the restomod or exotic vein.
History - especially drag-racing history - sadly is appreciated in monetary fashion by fewer and fewer people nowadays.
Sounds like ol' Dana Mecum sold Werner (on the auction idea) better than the cars themselves.

Kissimmee would have been a much better place and time of year......unless there is some health issue influencing the decision.

I’d have him on suicide watch after this afternoon.... I thought they would sell higher, but maybe the buyers just weren’t there.

Race cars just weren’t getting the money.

If I had a spare $200k laying around.... I'd have bought the S&M 68 Hemi Cuda or the 68 Yankee Peddler Hemi Dart and had either at the track next week. Clearly not going to hang with the current crop of SS/AH cars... but would still be a ton of fun to play with on the weekend, and both being real cars... it's not like either would lose 1/2 it's value by racing them. I doubt they ever drop under $100k unless you roll it... And you aren't going to build one from scratch for under $100k... so why not buy it, race it on the weekends and enjoy it. Let the wife sell it when your dead. biggrin

You’d have to update the cars to race... there goes the originality of them.
