Ok so i just found the problem. When i took the accelerator pump off the check wall and little brass strip that holds the ball in place fell out. The only thing i don,t know is how to keep the brass piece in place. Anybody no????

They are staked in place, you can do that also but be careful on the tool and amount of forced used to swell the fuel bowl material over the brass strap twocents hammer wrench

So can you just take a water pump pliers and go to the outside of the tabs and just sweeze it together a little to hold the little brass retainer or do you have another way of doing it?

Well...... you found “a” problem...... but that doesn’t really explain the empty float bowl and not staying running below 2000.

I agree as that's just the acell pump inlet check ball. All that will do is let the pump push fuel out the inlet when you step on it instead of pushing all the fuel in the pump housing out to the discharge check ball and out the pump shooters. It would just cause a stumble when stepping on the gas. That wont cause it to loose fuel or run rich. But it is a problem that you should fix of course. Ron

As stated on my last post I checked the fuel bowls after running it a little bit ans the fuel was level with the plug threads but when i hand thotted it no gas came out the shooters..

Installing a wideband A/F gauge in my 6 pack car has become a long overdue addition, and I highly recommend them to keep a tab on how my carbs are working and for dialing them in.

Change all your fuel filters. Check all the float levels as mentioned above. Disassemble and inspect each carb and put in a fresh power valve in the center one. Which valve one are you running by the way? I regularly give the needle and seat screw a sharp wrap with the but of a big screw driver to clear any debris that may be working its way into the seat area, which helps my peace of mind, but it has dislodged some debris every now and again over the years while on the open road..

Hopefully you have the reusable gaskets on there already. The needle and seats vary significantly on their ability to control higher than 6 psi fuel pressure. Some will hold upwards of 11 psi, but I digress.

Good catch on the accelerator pump. That one could have gone unnoticed for a while.

Don’t even have to pull the carb for that.

I like to have the fuel level sitting at the bottom of the site plug hole, and not really running out.

Didn't read to bottom yet suspect this , most common !

Now I read to bottom
, next time if this happens take the lid off and look
down into the carbs while its idling bad .
See if any one carb is dumping fuel into intake
So you can isolate which carb is goofy .

I cant envision exactly how this strap / check ball fell out
Of place.. i would suspect it fell out during disassembly.
But who know - i guess if that fell apart you might have been
sucking in extra fuel to idle circuit on center carb.

With todays crappy fuel and whoknows what in fuel tanks
and old lines - this is more common of needle seat issue .
But would have been nice to see how you stumbled across this
problem. I guess that would have been last place I would have
looked..

I really didn,t stubble on to it i just figured that if i had fuel in the bowl which i did and when i hand throttled it while not running and there was no gas coming out looking in the carb that it had to be something in the accelerator area. The little strap that hold the ball in place sit,s in between 2 little tab,s that get slighty folded over and it looked like it was done very poor'y.

If it happens again,a drop of JB Weld will fix that or you can go to the later umbrella style valve.

I've heard that Holley has updated the style so can you use the new style on the old style bowl and where can you buy one?
