what would it take to mount a 20000 heavy duty hitch that will not fit my 97 3500 [for newer dodge] or dont even try?

20,000 pounds? Don't even try to cobble that on to a truck. Get the proper hitch.

Can't you just buy a new hitch that will fit your 97 3500?

Adapting a hitch from a different vehicle can cause all kinds of problems for both the hitch, and the guy that modified it to fit on your truck. Insurance companies look at people that install modified hitches with a pretty negative attitude, if the guy doing it is running a business, his company will likely cancel his business policy! They take that stuff pretty seriously.

I ran a welding shop for 25 years, even with a certified welder, my insurance would not cover me (and threatened to cancel my policy) if I built a new hitch, I could only install hitches built by a hitch manufacturing company. The last 4 years I was in business, I couldn't even install a hitch made by a hitch manufacturing company, according to my insurance, they were only covering one company to install hitches in a specific area, and it wasn't me in my area.

So words from this "hitch gurw": buy a new hitch that bolts onto and is designed for your vehicle and have it installed by a hitch installer, or do it yourself. Gene

Yeah I got that. You want to cobble on a larger hitch to a truck that wasn't designed to tow that heavy of a trailer. What could possibly go wrong?

let me put it this way. I own cars that I am not Interested in losing them to hitch trouble. I have a 1997 dodge 3500 5 speed I bought new with 64000 miles, so I am not buying another truck. The. hitch I want fits 2003 up. I am just looking to see if someone has used a 2003 up hitch on there older dodge I have a chance to buy a new xtra heavy hitch for 100 dollars. I am looking to see what would work or will not work. I am on my third hitch NO welding or cutting Its for safety

The main reason this hitch will not fit is this. 2002 and older frames are 38 inches wide. 2003 and newer are 42 inch wide. Drawtite makes a class 5 hitch that is a direct fit.

Curt makes a 16000 lb 2400 lb tongue weight. With tow sway bars it goes to 17000 lbs. I actually have one of them. It weights almost 80lbs and it's beefy. I may sell itor I may put it on my 18 Ram. It was on my 12 ram 2500. It's only 2 years old and I kept it when I traded the 12 in for the new 18. And to answer your question, we have the same hitch on the 86 1 ton and it's the same as the one that was on the 12 ram.

I don't have your style ram but I'll say that all the new hitches I've bought have been Curt ones. Made in USA, nice and beefy and more importantly the one on our SUV still looks like new without any chipped or peeling paint while the truck is rusting out around it.
