So I have been farting around with this for a month now and have gotten no where. I have a 69 RR 383-4 speed. I purchased a used big block Lakewood Scatter shield and had planned on using that for safety issues. I put the clutch on the motor, bell housing on and installed the motor less trans. Got under the car and installed the 4 speed, shifter, cross member, drive shaft, etc. Put the TTI headers in and left the driver side hanging to install the Z bar. Here's where the fun starts, I am trying with no success to install the z bar and its too long. I do research and find that the z bar has to be shortened on the bell side 1 inch. Great! I figure i have this licked. Cut 1 inch off the z bar and go to installed the z bar only to have the z bar sit crooked. It looks as thought the bracket on the bell is up about 3/4 to an inch too high and its making the z bar not sit straight across from the bell to the frame rail bracket. Now I know your question is going to be has the car been hit, is the frame bent, is the bracket bent, etc? Not that I can tell and everything has been removed and restored. Also everything lines up perfectly, the motor mounts, the trans mount and cross member. So now I'm at the point where I am going to remover everything again and install the stock 11 inch bell housing. I have a bell that is in great shape but upon blasting it I noticed on one of the bell bolt holes there is a small crack. My question is do you think it will be an issue? I looked into purchasing a new bell and all I find is refurbished ones for $600. IDEAS???????? I just want to get my car running already. Frustrated S*** box owner. thanks

Why don't you modify the bracket on the scatter shield so it locates that end of the cross shaft at the correct angle?

Eons ago I installed a scatter shield on a small block Mopar and ran into the same deal. I cut the bracket off the scatter shield, relocated it, and welded it to the correct location and it worked great for the 6 or 7 years I owned the car. Gene

Does your Lakewood bell housing have part number stamped on it?
Can you post a picture of it looking at where the Z bar bracket and stud should be? If so please do that, you may have early street Hemi scatter shield that was made for the large flywheel(172 tooth 11 inch clutch) for the direct drive starters only shruggy
I hope not luck

I may be wrong but that appears to be a small crack in a dowel pin hole location. I would think as long as it is on the engine flat and check the run out to make sure the bore is straight with the crank I would personally bolt it down and run it. Someone has probably done that to the bell by pulling it on to the engine with the bolt rather than making sure it was on square to begin with. Those are my thoughts anyway.

I have a lakewood bell on my charger. Mine sits crooked too, but not by much, and it has been on there 20+ years working fine. Mine is a 70 and I cheated the ball up in its mount as far as I could to minimize the offset.

You probably have the wrong bracket on your bell. There are different brackets for different bodies.

I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!

Mike I went through this same nonsense years ago with a used swap-meet Scatter shield. Z-Bar sat crooked no matter what I did. Cause pedal release problems so I pulled it out and went to stock bell housing and never looked back.
