Anyone know anything about this unfortunate incident? No details about who and when on the other board. I wonder if it’s recent?

Ouch. Looks to me like the posts weren't bolted down.

Looks like they weren't bolted down and or poor grade hardware material (Bolts) and or poor grade porous metals/craftsmanship and or poor leveling of the whole unit.

The luck in the draw is that no one was under it to end up being buried in a drawer.

That car now has to be gone over entirely to check its trueness drivability.

Take second looks first time fellas.

I have a similar lift and it states they do not need to be bolted down but after the first time I lifted a car with it unbolted it was the last time... No thanks as I could easily see the load stresses shifting from vertical to horizontal quickly!! I am really surprised we have not seen more issues like this.

The problem with those types of instructions and or suggestions is that it originates in other places of manufacturing where the notion of Murphy is not thought of.
If it can happen, it most probably will at some time.
How would anyone lift a car on such a device without thinking that the slightest pull/tug (let me check the oil filter tightness or loosen that stubborn bolt) could trigger the weight displacement/distribution in the wrong direction.
It could have also been that the hydraulics/fluids slowly gave way and it was a gentle decent from what I am seeing. I would check everyone of those devices like NOW!
Anything that heavy floating above the waist belt is bound to tumble by a gust of a butterflies wings. Like I said guys, take second looks first time.

I sure doesn't look like the thing was bolted down. No chunks of concrete pulled up, no evidence of holes where broken hardware may have been.

I almost wonder if someone wasn't in the car, running the engine, bumped it in gear, then hit the brakes when the car started moving and the momentum parallelogramed the lift.

Is it just me or do the bolts where the front left post should have been attached look intact? Surely they should have been bent or broken if it collapsed? Somebody forget to bolt it on?

Also could have been no nuts put on the bolts as stated above. Thing is, those things also have lock downs on the way down. My friend had a few of those lifts and I remember the hydraulic fluid being a problem going up and down on one of them.
Lucked out that the car did not roll into the others on the very front or tipping and collapsing over and knocking the 440 model like dominos.

I have a friend with a lift very similar to that one. When you go to lower the car you must pay attention that all the locks have released. I have been present when he lower the car and one of lock didn't released . He was talking to me and paying attention and let car down a foot before he realized it had not released just lucky it didn't turn out like this guy's car. That what it looks like happen here.

The lift style is a portable lift which does not require it being bolted down. As far as the locks releasing or not when lowering it, that's a possibility, especially if the cables were not adjusted properly.

Looks like the cable snapped, but the locks should of held it up if the locks were on the posts..but then again, the posts were not bolted down so they slipped away..at least that's what it looks like to me..the damage does not look too bad

Whatever brand of lift it WAS......he's got at least 2 more of em sitting there. It has those cheesy lock ladders like a Bend Pak, but it's definitely a knock off. My 4 post lift doesn't bolt down either, but it's a lot heavier made than that one, plus it was made out of USA steel, and built in Missouri. Although I do walk around it and check all 4 locks before getting under something I have lifted, I don't worry about it falling. Whoever that guy is, he must be a Cuda man. He's got a building full of them. The car that fell got the passenger fender and door hammered pretty good, but hopefully that's about it.
