One of the Mopar magazines did a favorable article on these Guys.

I would definitely go 904-based transmission given the first gear ratio options and less parasitic drag.

I learned one thing quickly after owning my first 4 speed 318: the 727 is a power-sucking turd. I've had 318's and 360's with 727-based transmissions (3 speed and 4 speed od's) and they subtract a noticeable amount of horsepower. twocents

I had one of those SMR adapters I bought off of Craigslist that I was going to use to mate a 400 to a 518. It involves lopping of a section of the block where to the starter bolts. No going back. Went with an ultrabell instead and it's been great. Figured finding another 518 was easier than building another motor if it went south.

Just throwing this out there, as a friend made this suggestion regarding my setup. I have a 69 Charger with a 440/512 Max Wedge Indy head engine, backed by a CRT 727 RMVB and a Dana 60 w/3.73 gears and 295/50 rear tires. I won't be drag racing the car, however would like to eventually take it on the Power Tour and long road trip here in Texas. His suggestion was to just switch over to an 8 3/4 rear end with 2.76 gears, and tighten the converter if required. I realize that I would lose a lot down low, however it blows the tires off pretty easy just about in any gear as it is. What are ya'lls thoughts? I like the simplicity, however also like my Moser 60 rear end assembly.

I ran a 2.76 rear gear with 700+ hp for a few years. Worked well and could still destroy the tires (28x14.5 Hoosier QTP).
I added a few more street cars to stable since then so changed the gear back to the 3.55

I ran the Power Tour in 97 with a 500 horse 440, 727, and a tight 10' converter with a 2.76. It took a little getting used to on the street, it was a little sluggish in normal traffic, compared to what I was used to, but man was it great at road speed! With a 28" tall tire and a 6100 rpm governer, at cruise speed if you stomped it, it would downshift and at 118 mph it would hit 3rd and that 69 RR speedo needle would just disappear !

Dr. Diff was working on a 3.23 for the Dana. The 3.23 with a 28” tire is very streetable.

I can't help but wonder if there isn't a market for an affordable version of the old quick-change setup.
Like what we used in the Sprint Car; took only a few minutes to change ratios.
Make it modular, with tubes, axles & ends to accommodate different builds.

From my experience, the 904 is most helpful behind small cubic inch low torque engines when compared to the 727. Large cubic inch high torque engines do not really benefit that much from the swap. At least not enough for a street or bracket car.

Would those be noisy on a street car?

Also would like to add that GV sells a shorter adapter version for the 727 which I would have went for if it would have been available when I installed my unit. I have a 67 Coronet with 3.55 gears and the GV unit. Works great, over 7 years running. But as others have said, it would be nice to have more of a gear reduction.

Advantage to underdrive: the driveshaft speed remains at the pinion gear speed - low. This is always a negative factor with high cruising speed and deep overdrives: the D/S "thinks" you still have a 4.10:1 axle, and reaches its critical (safe) RPM at a lower MPH.

That be true work
That is one of the good things about a two speed rear end, I wish someone would make them for us hot rodders now luck

didn't mercury have a 2spd rear in one of it's cyclone models around 1970 or so ?
i vaguely remember reading in a hot rod magazine article about that. i believe it had a red cyclone with stripes on the cover.

I called Dr. Diff (Cass) regarding his 3.23 gear set for the Dana 60. After talking it over with him, and going with a 275/60 rear tire, this is probably my best decision. Keeping it simple. I'd love to have an overdrive and it may still happen if this doesn't satisfy my needs. But 2600 RPM's at 65 is probably good enough for the long cruises. Thanks everyone for your feedback!

I thought about an overdrive but I’m wanting performance and streetable and simple. I have had several drivers with 3.23 gears over the years. One that was most noteworthy would be a 1970 442 w-30 with auto and air. I had a h70-14 tire on it. It was a great road car and pretty peppy to boot. As long as you have reasonably quite exhaust with tail pipes I think you will be happy.

I currently have a 70 Challenger with a Tremec 5 speed and I LOVE 5th gear on the highway but my last car was a 72 Duster with a big block and 3.23 gears(727 trans) . I drove it to the track on the highway, ran 10.60's and drove it home. It was a great setup but I still wished it had a 4th gear to pull.

Depending on your converter and motor combo you don't want to cruise at to low of an RPM. My cruise RPM is 3000-3500 and it wouldn't be happy any lower than that due to the cam and converter. I just want overdrive so I can make that 3500RPM 70-75 instead of 60 lol.

Wow, 3000-3500 on the highway would drive me nuts, it's all about personal preference and what you can tolerate I'm sure.
Now if I can just find my pesky driveshaft vibration at 63-73 mph with the Tremec 5 speed, I've tried pinion angle shims in both directons and even bought a new custom driveshaft, also had all 4 tire balances re-checked, still vibrates. I miss my Duster lol.
