Guys,

I had an issues with my brake lights not working in my 70 Cuda. So I researched and replaced my turn signal assembly in the steering wheel. The brake lights now work but I now have another problem. When I turn on the ignition, the hazard flasher by the radio activates and my taillights blink (not my front lights or dash lights). When I pull the hazard light switch, all the hazards work as intended. Someone in the past messed with the stock wiring and made some changes, maybe compensating for a bad turn signal switch, I don't know. Is there a easy way to either bypass the hazard relay without affecting my taillights, turn signals etc.? I plan on replacing the wiring this winter but I just want to get the car on the road for now.

Thanks.

Pull the hazard flasher and see if that fixes it.

I did pull the flasher and it fixed the blinking issue. However, my tail lights and turn signals do not work. What a Cluster!!

Not sure if they're located next to each other on an E-body, but:
Try swapping the signal flasher & hazard flasher plugs.

It would take some "rigging" to use the hazard flasher as a turn signal switch, and why the fronts & rears would behave differently is weird.
If all of the stock harness is there, and not burned/shorted/missing parts, I'd sure be tempted to remove all of the add-on wiring.
Then go through every function one by one.
This is where a FSM comes in handy.

Dumb question but are you sure you pulled the right one of the two flashers?

When weird stuff like this happens, check ALL the fuses 1st thing.

Maybe it’s the signal switch. I put a new one in my 67 and NOW the stupid brake lights work off the dimmer switch. I have to make sure the dash lights are super bright each time I take the car out so the signals and tail lights can be seen. I did not have this problem prior to swapping the switch.

Not so funny story..... So, last night we had a storm pass through. After it passed, I opened the windows and heard a muffled car horn going off. I thought what a poor sap... Well, I went outside and heard that it was coming from my shop. The 70 Cuda that I am having electrical issues with decided to blow its horn for no reason. I disconnected everything and checked for damage. Now I know that there is some serious issues going on. I am just happy that I caught it in time and am not dealing with a fire. Scary stuff....

Did you use the turn signal switch with the thin hazard button? (1970)

Or the 1971 up with the thick button?

If you used the fat one, the bottom of it has to be trimmed off so it slides into the column recess into the full 'off' position.

IMO, you have been lucky to have gotten 2 warnings, you may not get a 3rd. I would park it and keep the battery disconnected until you rewire the ENTIRE car

Time to properly rewire the whole car.
make sure you bypass the ammeter gauge and the bulkhead connector since they are the weakest links in the system.
No matter if it is a 700.00 car or 70K car I always run an extra wire with a fusible link between the alternator and starter relay to take the load off the ammeter gauge.
Any corrosion at the bulkhead connector must be cleaned--or if really bad replace it.
Always use diaelectric grease.

With a multi-meter check continuity on each circuit.
I bet if you open up the harness from the bulkhead to the column you will see wires melted together.
Not a uncommon issue with 40+ year old wires cannot handle the resistance anymore.
Especially if there are any aftermarket add-ons putting a load on the electrical system. (cooling fans, stereo, lights, hotter ignition system, etc).
Hope this helps and good luck.
