Just thought I'd inquire again regarding feedback on folks who have installed O/D's in their B-Bodies and how well you may or may not like it, ease of installation and cost. Not trying to get any arguments, just feedback. I've been busy with customer cars so I haven't been able to spend time with my own, however once I'm done with a few customers slots I'm going to schedule my own car in for some overdue mods. Basically, I want my 69 440 Charger to be as reliable if needed to drive on a Power Tour and not be taxed by my current Dana 60 with 3.73's. I've found a lot out already by searching, just thought I'd get any current upgrades or info.

Thanks
Darren

Did you have to cut the floor and or cross member up?

I did the LGT-SS700 5-speed trans. I really like the overdrive, and diphram clutch, but install was a pain. Did have to cut top of tunnel for shifter and the T-bar brace in the tunnel for clearance. The speedometer cable still comes out at the crossmember, so clearance is a problem there too, but it works. I don't know what the best overdrive option is if you want to maintain the stock trans tunnel?
The kit I received was supposed to fit, but what they did was use a trans crossmember that dropped the back if the transmission down about 1.5 to 2" from stock. This tilted the engine back to where the headers were hitting the suspension, and the air cleaner was tilted too. So to get it to fit, had to cut T-Bar bracket inside the tunnel to get the trans output back to stock height.

Yeah that's what I don't want to get into. The Gear Vendors is the simplest, however I'm still on the fence as it's only .78 O/D. The SST A41 has a .70 O/D and also fits extremely well from what I have read, however 2X the cost. I don't mind paying the difference if the A41 is that much better.

Pretty much any stick besides Passon's OD 4-speed or their $$$$ 5-speed is going to require some mods to the car, as far as I know.
The GV only requires some wiring, 2 switches, and driveshaft shortening, and that's a wash vs. any trans of different length than the 833.
I have one in my Dually with 4.10s and it made a world of difference, turning it into 3.20. 70-75 MPH is a piece of cake in OD.
It's also been bulletproof for almost 25 years.

I would have a hard time not having OD now....A500 behind the turbo 383 in my Fury and circa 2009 Keisler 5spd kit in my 68 Charger. The TKO was a PITA to get set up correctly and I don't like how it shifts at all, I'll never do one of those again, but OD and a/c are essential for me now up

I have a G-V behind my 727 in a E-body and just love it. Have beating on it for 6-7 years and zero problem.
+ Easy install, just bolt on, simple wiring.

I love my GV. My Coronet has a 3.54 Dana. The car is much more useable now. Minor clearance issues in the tunnel, no cutting required. I did have to tighten my 11” converter.
I also adjusted my pinion angle slightly after shortening the driveshaft.
Minor work really and the OD ratio is fine, see photo.

I found this chart as part of an answer to a question similar to the one the OP asked. It sums up my feelings on the matter. I have an E body and love the 518 behind my Hemi with 3.91s. I did not have to make any real mods to the car, just some light massaging. I will probably re-make the tranny mount sometime soon since I am not happy with the one I have now. And the only other thing that I would like to be different would be the weight. Man that thing is heavy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So you think the GV is a cleaner install? Maybe. If you don't mind the weight of a GV unit hanging off a long lever arm bolted to the back of a 727 case that wasn't designed for it I don't see how you would mind having a different transmission crossmember supporting a factory designed transmission.

GV = .78 OD
500/518 = .68 OD

Using a 275/60-15 rear tire and 3.23 gears this is what the numbers look like at 60 mph:
No OD = 2300 rpm
GV = 1900 rpm
518 = 1600 rpm

75 mph:
No OD = 2900 rpm
GV = 2300 rpm
518 = 2000 rpm

For you hot rodders out there here's what it looks like with 4.10 gears.
60 mph:
No OD = 3000 rpm
GV = 2300 rpm
518 = 2000 rpm

75 mph:
No OD = 3700 rpm
GV = 2900 rpm
518 = 2500 rpm

Master, again and still

that extra 300-400 rpm drop is pretty significant at 75 mph. 80-85 is probably the flow of traffic on the highway here. gear vendors really missed the boat not offering a bigger gear reduction.

Good info, Dave; yeah, that's significant.

For a stick, though, choices are more difficult.

since an A500 was mentioned behind a 383, how much HP and torque can one of those handle, and what was used to adapt the A500 to a big block ?

Give Darren Smith a call at Pro Trans. They’re in Waco TX now and he’s done OD builds and installs. Believe he’s also putting one in his Coronet build 👍🏻

I have it my 4200lbs fury. Turbo charged 383 but not a high power unit yet. Street car not a race car but it's been fine.
Tranztech in Dubuque ia does it, bb 727 bell is cut off and bolted on so everything oem still hooks up.

No problem:

http://smrtrans.tripod.com/smrtransmissionsintro/index.html

One of the Mopar magazines did a favorable article on these Guys.

I would definitely go 904-based transmission given the first gear ratio options and less parasitic drag.

I learned one thing quickly after owning my first 4 speed 318: the 727 is a power-sucking turd. I've had 318's and 360's with 727-based transmissions (3 speed and 4 speed od's) and they subtract a noticeable amount of horsepower. twocents

I have a keisler TKO in my charger from around 2003 and installed an 855 over the winter in a customers car.
The only way you know the 855 from an 833 is the 5th gear and the speedometer gear on the passenger side.
Its truly bolt in. I'd never do another TKO

I don't know.

I don't think you install it backwards, but GV does offer underdrive units as well as overdrive units.
