OK so a buddy (not me wink ) has landed a 528 Hemi and wants a little more HP/TQ that what it put out for his new ride/build. Application is mostly street with probably a few meetings at the track per year for some grudge racing with buddies.

I dont know who built the engine but the specs that were provided are as follows :

528 ci
MP Block 4.500" bore, STD deck height, ARP studs throughout.
Ross forged pistons, 10:1 CR with a .040" Cometic gasket
Eagle H beams and steel Eagle 4.150 crank
Indy 426-1 heads, mild cleanup
Indy rollers
Indy 4150 4 BBL intake
Pro systems 1050 4150 carb
TTI 2.25"x 3.5"headers
Comp .550" hyd cam (will get the grind number when it comes out)
6 Qt Milodon pan, windage tray
Not sure what oil pump yet but pickup is internal with a 1/2" size.

Dynoed out locally at 610HP at 6000, 606 ft/lbs at 4700, we want more from this combo while maintaining good overall reliability. We'd like to get over 700HP with a cam change and a bump in CR, just not sure if the cleaned up 426-1s will get us there with just these changes from what we have. A solid FT in this combo to achieve this outcome would be ideal....... remove the inner springs for break in, refit the inners etc the usual drill.

So we're looking for input - its going in a full bodied 69 Charger with a built 727 and a Dana 60, so it will probably come in at around 3800lbs or so. Tire OD to be 29", convertor and rear gear to be specd once we nut out the cam.

Other than the cam, we'll upgrade pan to a larger 8 qt pan/windage tray for obvious reasons. If we can can squeeze a little more CR (closer to 10.5:1) with a .020" or so thick Cometic gasket assuming my V to P is OK then that would be ideal.

I know Dwayne Porter is very good at speccing cams and Ive used Bullet myself but has anyone used a grind in a similar combo that made very good HP/TQ and (other than proper breakin) was reliable?

Fire away guys !!

I have one at home but I forgot the exact specs. Just call Ray Barton and get the flat tappet cam that they put in their 800HP pump gas single 4-bbl 528's. That should wake it up.

Go to Ray Barton or Dwayne. They have tons of real world experience and can get you where you want to be.

Your buddy's combo is very close to mine. 540", MP heads ported by MCH, 250*FTS cam. Reciprocating assembly and cam were from Ray Barton. Thumper did my Dominator. It made 697HP on the engine dyno during break-in and was pulling vacuum, so a bit more carb and we would have been over 700HP.

This combo idles and drives better than any of the 500+" wedges I have had. It is a pleasure to drive. I don't know who to give the most credit to, Ray Barton or Dominic (Thumper). So, bow to both. Thank you!

And did I mention that I am running an Indy dual plane intake?

I changed my 550 lift solid for a 650 lift solid roller in my 528 and it ran a lot better, still idled smooth and tractable. Nothing special just a regular Comp cams 650 lift roller, I can't remember the .050 on it.That's probably where I would start next time.

I just have a 6 qt pan on my Hemi. I also have an AccuSump. I did not want that big pan hanging down with all the speed bumps around anymore. And my car may sit for a couple of weeks at a time and I like the idea of pre-oiling it before start-up. The AccuSump let's me run the 6 qt pan, provides any extra oil capacity the Hemi may need, and helps the engine to never start dry. twocents

Sounds to me like it's a good bit over 260 @ .050" if that's how it behaves.

You know what I'm gonna say, but I'll say it anyway...call Dwayne!
And I'd go roller.

Hey Chip - a roller is out for this deal as per the owner, its the best compromise between initial cost, maintenance etc and HP/TQ for him/the application. Its a 95% street car with a possible few blasts down the track per year ie: 1 or 2 meetings tops.

I rang Dwayne twice and left messages for him - no dice, could'nt get him and left a message the second time frown

Does he have email?

I was leaning towards a flat tappet cam and Ray Barton prefers flats for the street. So, that's whats in my Hemi. There are just as many horror stories with the rollers as with the flats. For our street Hemis, there really aren't enough advantages to offset the higher cost and potentially higher maintenance of the rollers.

And just to be clear, there are applications where roller lifters are clearly the better choice. Just not necessarily in our street Hemis.
