Yep, trying to rush through too much on that day.
I think I may have posted that the rings were on the pistons ready to install before it was decided to give them more gap.
I was busy cutting and re-welding the 1/2" oil pickup tube that was too long for the oil pan, and my friend and his 11-year old were working on the pistons, but I think I screwed up telling them the rings go with the bevel to the top.
Not sure how #3 got installed without compression rings. Anyhow, I'll have to pull them all out and get it corrected. Will see how good the Cometic head gaskets re-seal (with some copper coat), and the Jegs windage tray/oil pan gasket.

Engine is back together again, with all the rings in correctly.
Putting the engine back in the car Sunday.

The missing rings were on the work bench, but they were the ones my buddy gapped too big.
He was supposed to grab new rings from another ring set, file-fit them and put them on the piston.
I think Murphys Law and distractions, and having my friends 11-year old putting the ring compressor on the pistons all
created the mess-up. But Saturday, pulled all the pistons, check all the rings, installed new rings on #3, and put it back together.
Sunday (yesterday) got the engine back in the car and running (at 9:30 pm.) I'm sure the neighbors like hearing the engine fire up with no exhaust at that time of night.

It’s probably something more like.......

Friends don’t let friends help put motors together.

Do post your embarrassing screw-ups on the 'net, maybe there is something to learn from my mistakes smile

Sort of like don't use a claw hammer to remove the harmonic balancer....

Or degree the cams ICL while measuring the exhaust lobe...

Or installing the trans, filling it with ATF & then realize the converter is in the trunk.

I have done the "install trans with the converter not fully installed". Needed a new trans pump after that.

The more common, installing distributor 180-degrees out.

Even used cardboard to stop a muffler rattle when I was 16. The cardboard caught on fire... No damage, but scared cars I was driving past.

I'm sure I have more from when I was a kid, like not numbering the rods and caps of a 318, installing them and the engine would not rotate ... Took awhile to match them up correctly.
