I have gone through 2 coils. They get almost as hot as the headers. What could cause this? Bad voltage regulator or alternator?

Is the blaster 2 coil the small dry style coil? If so I have not heard good things about them. I had one fail on me on Drag Week 2013 and the only spare ignition pieces I didn't have was a coil, I left 2 of them on the bench at home lol. The one that failed maybe had 1000 miles on it tops.

Add me to the list

Blaster 2 red coil will ballast lasted about three summers

My Blaster high vibration lasted not even a summer

Both started running erratic missing at higher RPMs and the tell tail sign was the Auto Meter Tachometer bouncing all over the place even at lower RPMs

Running a Mopar “Made In The USA” brand new coil in the box that I bought sometime in the 90s that I found in the attic

Has been flawless with the Mopar Performance Chrome ECU and a factory Chrysler 400 Distributor that I rebuilt

What else is part of your ignition system ? Points or Electronic ? Using a Ballast Resistor ?

If Electronic what are you running for a box , MSD or Mopar ECU

My black blaster 2 coil didn't last a year got every bit as hot as the headers. I'm running a msd 6al-2. Sent it back to get checked and they just sent a new one. Still in the box and never used. Using an HVC 11 coil now.

I've posted this before, but it's probably buried in the Archives:
I'll assume we're discussing failures of the oil-filled cylindrical Blaster 2.
Ran one for many years, mounted horizontally, with an MSD6, recurved MP distributor.
MSD wants main power to be connected directly to battery, no ballast resistor.
Anyway, all was good until one day no start.
Tested the MSD, it failed.
Sent it to West Tech in NC & spoke with them, they asked about the coil.
Bottom line, horizontal mounting kills the oil-filled coils (vertical not so much); they were amazed I'd had it that way for many years (didn't drive the car that much).
Anyway, that created a problem in the MSD box. Basically, overheating = resistance = failure.
They fixed that and recommended the epoxy coils; the F150/302 coil = the equivalent MSD minus the red paint, at about $40 with separate dedicated pigtail from AutoZone, etc.
Also requires HEI-style coil wire, inexpensive again from AutoZone or whatever.
Not only fixed, but faster startup & cleaner running afterwards, and I've swapped out a couple of B2 coils with that setup since and highly recommend it.

Have a part number on that f150 coil? just noticed a high rpm miss and have a blaster 2, picked up a replacement but from sounds of it I should return it.

Don't recall #, but it's for '90 F150 with 302/5.0
Looks a lot like an HEI coil but with 2 spade terminals instead of 3 wires.
The dedicated terminal/plug, some uninsulated butt splices, and some shrink tubing makes for a clean installation.
I usually fab a bracket out of angle-stock aluminum and mount the coil to it with some long bolts, other end to engine somewhere.
Can be mounted at any angle or direction you like.

FD-478 is the part # for the ford coil. I just replaced my blaster 2 with one last week.

Not to discount the quality of the FD-478, but what are other guys using for a coil( Mallory, Accel,...???). I have a Blaster 2 with a MSD 6-AL, and
at 3/4 track it seems to stutter or breakup intermittently, also the Tach has been wacky intermittently. any advice would be appreciated.
Also how would you mount the fd-478.

the stutter/breakup, is it the same in all 3 gears at the same RPM or just in high gear? Yes that coil is gonna need a bit of fabbing to mount it.

Anytime my car had a hiccup or misfire it was always MSD box related, I went through a few Digital 6 boxes over several years. I only had the one coil die and it was a NO FIRE and not a misfire problem. I ejected all the MSD stuff from my car when I went with fuel injection and have enjoyed the reliability.

I wouldn't discount that ford coil as not having enough spark if that is what you are worried about. The later model cars have some pretty hot coils on them. I know chevrolet also had a coil similar to that ford coil that could support some pretty decent power.

I use the MSD 8252 (Blaster HVC) coil on the cuda and it's been great since 2006.
I have the ford coil (FD-478 or Auto Zone C-839) on the road runner.

I had misfiring issues w/ 2 brand new MSD Digital 6 Plus boxes years ago (2003-2004). Put my old analog 6AL back on and never looked back. I'm still leery of the digital boxes and not a fan of anything that needs a computer to tune it, even though they have some awesome features I could really use.

I had this happen and it was the tach causing it. Took forever to find it but got lucky one day and saw the tach acting weird. No problem in 6 years since replacing it. Easy test just disconnect the tach wire on the msd box and see if it goes away.

I've seen this also on a friend's Camaro. Intermittent misfire and it was the tachometer (5" Autogage) causing it. Unplugged it from the MSD box and no more problem.

What I find interesting about the coil laying on its side causing the problem is, that’s how most of the Mopar V8 coils were mounted from the factory.
Are those oil filled?

Mine was the 8222 vibration epoxy blaster that they claim could be mounted sideways and it still got extremely hot.

FWIW...there's a 20 year old MSD Blaster 2 coil on my dad's road runner and it's mounted sideways. Been on his car since 2008 and it was on my car from 1998-2006.
Guess it may be like everything else...the quality nowadays isn't what it used to be.
