I don't know what the horizontal oil-filled deal is - yup, factory did it, and mine I referred to sat there from 1988-2014.
I've owned a bunch of stock '67-up Mopars with their original coils, up until around 2000 when I most of them off.
But I've heard before that oil-filled coils are not actually full, and get hot, which I guess creates resistance in MSD boxes?
Nevertheless, that F150 epoxy coil works great if you don't need stock-appearing.

^^^ I was wondering that myself, Mine (in the pic) was dirt cheap from rockauto. I ain't used this one yet. It does get dynamite reviews. A prior one was real good but I dont remember the brand/where I got it, ran it straight thru, no ballast/OE electronic 70's (pre mallory) dist

With my luck with aftermarket parts I would feel better about a new one from the dealer, or an OEM one from a salvage before I used one from a parts store. My last couple of dealings with parts store parts haven't gone well, from a speed sensor that didn't work to a water pump so poorly cast the bolts wouldn't even go in it.

Also how would you mount the fd-478.

I had this happen and it was the tach causing it. Took forever to find it but got lucky one day and saw the tach acting weird. No problem in 6 years since replacing it. Easy test just disconnect the tach wire on the msd box and see if it goes away.

so would you go down the track without a tach??? i don't think i have a spare tach sitting around.

Yes I just ran it without one kinda by ear since I had a rev limiter and the problem was showing up before red line. I was talking to Rick Allison (AA transmission) about what happened at Gateway one year and asked if he could believe it and he said yep same thing happened to him he said his crew was laughing at him thinking he forgot to turn on the second fuel pump but it was a bad tach.

I should add that my MSD first burnt up a chrome accel super stock coil and left me stranded before I changed it to the 8222 blaster which in turn was getting super hot. Ended up with the high dollar 8253 which has been fine.

The epoxy filled MSD blaster coil on our 70 RR lasted maybe 6 months. I got it to replace the cooked Accel coil that had lasted for maybe 8 years. Threw in a spare 20-30 year old plain old Lucas coil we had on the shelf. It worked but one of the low voltage studs was stripped so gave an intermittent misfire. Got a brand new Lucas Sport Coil for like $40 and been working fine until we parked it due to the rust.
Returned the MSD coil for credit, Summit was great about it, refunded my credit card promptly, no issues there.
