I am going to look at an 833 that that the input shaft broke or sheered off. I'm thinking I can source the main parts locally used. He said he turned it and ran it through the gears. He wasn't trying to sell it I was trying to buy it. it sounds as if he will trade for something reasonable that I don't plan to use.... so I want it.

Maybe this was a high RPM clutch dump with stickies?

I think the bearing retained is gone/off and the bearing is possible grenanded, any reason to run from it?

Anything special to look for?

If the bearing went then there's the possibility of internal damage. What sort of coin are we talking about ?? I think right off the bat you're looking at about $400 in replacement parts. Why not just find another decent trans that only needs a freshening up ?

Don't know, I think he wants to possibly trade for parts

EDIT: He said the bearing looks ok, but there's' no retainer. That's good news

I broke the input shaft and front bearing retainer off due to a bad vibration from the driveshaft, that was a long time ago when parts where a lot cheaper.
If I was you I would take the side cover off and look at the insides real hard to see if there is any other damage and how bad the syncho rings and the little tiny engagement teeth on each gear are before deciding on to buy it or not scope
If the little teeth on the syncro rings or gears are damaged, not sharp, it will not shift good into those gears work shruggy
You need to make sure which version this tranny is before ordering parts also, 23 spline or 18 spline and which year it is so you get the correct input shaft and retainer scope
Murphy is lurking ready to mess with all of us hot rodders and car racers whistling work

Unless it’s an 18 spline it’s probable not worth hassling with.

There are parts available. When you see that, you know the clutch was at fault.

Just because you think it won't make it true. Horsepower is KING. To dispute this is stupid. C. Alston

Ditto on the inspection. If a 71 up with close ratio gears, your not going to find replacement gears easily that are not expensive. By the time you add a bearing retainer, input shaft, gasket kit and any other parts you may fine it not worth the effort.
