My 87 D150 is having sporadic braking issues. When it happens, with very light braking pressure, the driver side front brake will grab violently, locking up the wheel. This may happen a couple times, then is goes away for days at a time...not sure what is going on here.
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks in advance.

Does it happen only after its parked in the rain? Paul Now that I think about it, yes, it has happened more in the rain.

Is the pass side working when the dr side locks up ? I believe so, but the driver side front dips hard and skids to a stop.

My `86 D150 does it as well , either rain or very damp conditions will trigger it. The first time it happened was like WHAT WAS THAT? I have just learned to live with it for now. Next brake job I will use better stuff. Paul

Thanks in advance. If it's just one side I would be replacing calipers or pistons, clean and lube all the slides and replace the brake hoses. You also need to look at the wheel bearing then clean and repack them. Probably a good idea to replace or resurface the rotors and replace the pads. Also now that I think about it check the suspension especially the strut rod bushings.

Might also want to inspect the frame etc. had a customer several years ago that had a similar issue with a 56 Ford. Several shops had looked at it, aligned it etc to no avail. He brought it to us and we found the front cross member ( K member equivalent) was rotted and split 3/4 of the way around. How the others missed something so blatantly obvious still makes me wonder

Thanks everyone. When I bought the truck years ago I replaced the rear brakes first thing...it was metal on metal...no pad left on the shoe. The previous owner had just replace the front brakes, so I never looked too closely at them. Through the past 8-9 years I've found SO MANY rig jobs on this truck...the previous owners favorite tool was duct tape.....Anyway, I guess I'm just going to take the front brakes completely apart and rebuild/replace everything. I'll check everything as I go....Strut bushing and frame, I had not thought of those, I'll definitely take a look while I'm there.
Thanks everyone.

Grease the contact points between the caliper and the bracket. The give away symptom is it acting up mostly after some rain. The grease has worn away and ya get a light rust build up which binds the caliper. Enough pressure to pop it loss is enough pressure to lock it up when it moves. I more commonly see this on rear drums when the grease between the shoe and backing plate has worn away.
