Looking at two E-body axle housings today and noticed some differences between the two. Overall length and spring perch location are the same. Note the wider flaring of the axle tube where it meets the flange on the bottom one. The bottom one is the original out of my T/A and the original in my 71 is the same. Is the narrower flaring from a later model? Also, which vent style is correct for a 70?

Thanks!

The narrow flaring is an aftermarket flange that accepts only the Green bearing. Somebody did a nice job of welding it on and blending it into the housing.

The factory housing end needs to be deeper to accept the bearing retaining collar and seal.

John, that’s plausible but I cannot see any signs of welding. Also, wouldn’t you need to cut down a longer tube to get that result?

Yeah that's factory. Maybe the later ones eliminated the bulged end. shruggy

Maybe there were a couple different suppliers? Here is the original rear axle from my 73.

The top housing is a 1974 model.

1974 only? Wild. Any other differences that year? Were the axles/bearing setups unique as well?

1974 and maybe some 1973. 1974 pickup and van rears were also like that.

I never noticed any other differences.

i have a complete 70 newport rear on the shelf, and it has the "long" style ends. my charger also has those ends.
so should all 8 3/4's then, have that style of bearing housings [ the "long" style] until the late 73 and end of line 74 model years ?
beer

I'd be interested to see a shot looking into the housing end of the '74.

The short housing ends contain the same inner axle seal in the same location as the wide version.

The tubing is just thinner in that area.
