Found this online.
Although cellulitis can occur anywhere on your body, the most common location is the lower leg. Bacteria are most likely to enter disrupted areas of skin, such as where you've had recent surgery, cuts, puncture wounds, an ulcer, athlete's foot or dermatitis.

Animal bites can cause cellulitis. Bacteria can also enter through areas of dry, flaky skin or swollen skin.

Do you have any idea of what caused this to happen??

Originally they thought it was dry skin, and some foreign particle got in a small crack and the infection was under the skin. Since my skin is dry, applying a moisturizing cream seems to keep out any bacteria. I can't figure out what caused the flare-up this time. Could be a case of cellulitis that reoccurs from time to time.

Cellulitis is a tough one. My mother & deceased aunt had bouts with this, & it's tough to get cured. It's also very dangerous if it gets infected & starts weeping. I hope you kick it Stu.

One more thing I found that helped was keeping the leg raised up above your heart level if possible. Even putting it up on another chair while watching TV etc, seems to help a lot. You could put a pillow under your leg in bed to keep it elevated. If your leg gets worse, I would go to the ER. The doctors told me last time that if I had let things go too far, I might have lost part of my leg. That's how serious it is. It's a tough infection to get under control. I hope yours gets better soon !

We are starting to see more and more diseases that haven’t been common in the last 40 years. When you have a population of people coming tntothecountry from the Southern Hemisphere they are bringing tropical diseases never seen by us people in the US. Let’s all hope and hopefully your doctors are thinking outside the box.

Get well my friend

By the way Stu, with all the wet weather you’ve had has there been an above normal amount of mosquitos? Mosquito bites can cause cellulitis. Here in the valley mosquitos is deemed to be the most dangerous animal in the valley. West Nile virus is a real thing here.

Hoping you get well soon, Stu. You too, BH27G1B.

I had surgery on my lower leg years ago and have had episodes of cellulitis since. They used to be fairly frequent, maybe once or twice a year. One landed me in the hospital on IV antibiotics. I haven't had an episode in a year or so, hoping I'm done with it. luck

Man this is all so crazy that so many of us are all sick from this at one time or another.
I hope you will be ok soon as the antibiotics start working.
I cant see myself going back to work for maybe a solid week.
Good luck
Stu

The standard antibiotics did nothing to stop the spread so they game me a more "effective" type that is starting to work and sent me home just now.

The nurse thinks it could be from some bug bite that are super resistant to antibiotics. Going to laid up for a few more days i guess.

Thats not too bad, as long as you can feel your toes you are ok. I have been dealing with it for 20 years, docs have no idea why it started. I felt like sheet one morning, leg pain, and went to doc at noon, found nothing, at 5 pm I was in er with iv bag and foot the size of a football. If you are smart you will wear compression socks for the rest of your life, i know it sucks but once the little valves are damaged in your veins they never heal. Sitting around does not work all the time because the calf muscles help pump blood out of the lower legs. Go to ames walker.com, buy a leg lounge leg pillow, and some venosan knee high socks. It also helps to keep vaseline on it to keep it sealed. I hope they have you putting an antibacterial ointment on it, if not ask why not. The brown discoloration takes at least 7 years to go away, thats just cosmetic, red must be delt with. About every 5 years I have to get shot up, they have no idea why, no diabeties, no high blood pressure, no injuries, just a pain in the rear. Sorry for the bad news

Thank you for your advice. I have asked about any type of cream or ointment and the doctor said dont put anything on it at all. I will look into the compression socks and pillow as you suggusted.
Thank you
Stu

Maybe since they think it is from a bug bite, nothing on it who knows. You might want to see a dermatologist after the infection is gone, just take it serious and keep after it. Good luck with your treatment.

I saw my doctor today, My leg looks the same after 5 days of antibiotics. She said it will take a while for it to get better, and prescribed 3 more days in addition to the initial 7. Then if it does not improve, she will get me on a different antibiotic. Using an antibiotic ointment besides the moisturizing cream twice daily, avoiding any scratches in that area, and keeping the leg warm and raised will help, she advised. I will heed all advice...Carlisle is fast approaching.
