Been wanting to try an open element air cleaner on the Durango. I picked up a 14" air cleaner for $3 at an estate sale and bought a 14 x 3 filter for a '69 Chevelle 396 at AZ for $6. Installed it and all I can say is WOW! I had heard the factory air filter assy. was very restrictive but I can't believe the difference. I can actually feel it in my butt dyno plus I get an AVS-type wail now at full-throttle. Can't say if it will help fuel mileage since I can't keep my foot out of it. biggrin drive Maybe after the new wears off I can check to see if there's any improvement. boogie
Oh, and the 14" was a tight fit. Had to trim the hood weatherstrip just a little. up Smaller assy. for a Durango/Dakota (12"?) might be better but probably not a problem on a Ram.

Back in high school a friend had a '95 Ram w/ a 318/5.2 magnum. He put an open element K&N filter on it and I remember him saying it made a difference. Sure sounded good inside the truck too.
It outran my '89 Silverado w/ a TBI 350, lol.

When making a change like that it is a good idea to check the full throttle MAP and IAT sensor readings before and then after. Temperature affects the power more than pressure changes.

Years ago I made a U tube manometer out of clear vinyl tubing and at full throttle and 4000 rpm on a1995 Ram Magnum 5.9 V8 measured 4 inches of water restriction ahead of the air cleaner element. This was the restriction from the passenger side fender inlet, through the corrugated plastic hose and into the air filter housing but ahead of the paper filter element.

If I remember right the total restriction measured by the MAP sensor was 1.6 inches of Mercury, which converts to 21.8 inches of water.

If I remember right the legendary Chrysler engineer Tom Hoover removed a headlight and by taking in air there got the inlet restriction down to zero. At 80 mph it climbed to +1 inch water.

Forward facing inlets like this would clog your air filter with bugs and debris kicked up by the road traffic.

Those big 18 wheel trucks that take in engine inlet air way up high get cooler air.
Air near the pavement is hotter, as this I75 weather station shows.

lol, right on buddy, you went from a factory cold air intake that pulls air from inside the fender, to a hot air intake sucking in everything it can from the exhaust manifolds. Nicely done! tonguue

I actually have one 14 x 3 Edelbrock setup with the proper "J" stud and some other K and N horseschitt "hot air kit" from two Rams that I bought from Idiots over the years: free to anyone that will send Me their factory Cummins or V8 gaspot air intakes in exhange.

Several years ago when Mopar Action did ScatDak, they experiemnted with a open 14x3 on a 5.9. Conventional wisdom said the hughes intake would offer the best gain and the air filter would be no diff. Then in the quarter mile, the hughes did 1/10 if I remember and the air filter did3/10s. Made no sense at the time, but it suggested that the open element style air filter may offer power gains against conventional wisdom

Well, hey, Griz, long time, no hear from. tonguue
I have read numerous places about the factory air cleaner being very restrictive and the arguments about cold air intakes vs. open air elements. Being as I had one available for less than $10, I thought I would give it a try. up Very noticeable seat-of-the-pants difference but as I said, no idea about the effect on fuel mileage since the new hasn't worn off yet. wink
If you recall, most musclecars used under hood air and did OK with it. grin
BTW, I have a factory air cleaner assy. from my '06 2500 Cummins if you really want it. I installed a BHAF just for grins (actually picked up 1 mpg) but traded the truck for the wife's first Challenger before I could see how many miles the filter would go between changes. boogie

If you do a careful test there will be no MPG difference on a fuel injected, o2 sensor controlled, gasoline engine due to air filter restriction at part throttle. Even highly “clogged” dirty air filters have no measurable MPG effect on FI/ O2 sensor gasoline engines at part throttle.
Heated intake air at part throttle operation “slightly” improves fuel economy, unless the PCM starts retarding ignition timing a lot when it senses hotter intake air via the IAT sensor. Both OBD-I and OBD-II Magnum V8s retard ignition timing as either IAT or coolant sensor shows hotter.

This is not true of carburetor gasoline engines. In those older carb engines air filter restriction affects the air to fuel ratio.

This is not true of diesel engines. Low restriction air filters on diesels raise the air/ fuel ratio. Low restriction exhaust systems also raise the air/fuel ratio on diesels.
